Abstract: This thesis concerns itself with applying the theory of the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce on one particular type of the Qur’anic verses. That is, the universal verses, which involve references to a number of aspects of the universe i.e., Earth, Heavens, Stars, Seas, Wind, among others. The thesis focuses on the second triadic proposed by Peirce to interpret the Sign. This triadic studies the Sign in relation to its subject, which is embodied in three components. They are : Icon, Index, and Symbol. The thesis falls into an Introduction, three Chapters and a Conclusion. The Introduction deals with such important and pertinent issues as the semiology, its origin, formation and development, its definition, and the semiotic approaches utilized by scholars in both Arabic and Western heritages. The Introduction also sheds some light on the contemporary trends of semiology manifested in the works of the main two philosophers i.e., Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce. The main semiotic pillars of Peirce's theory (Sign, Semosis, and Interpretants) along with the main bases upon which the semiotic approach is established are dealt with in the Introduction as well. The first Chapter accounts for the Semiotic Icon of the Universal Qur’anic Verses. In which the Iconic Signs of these verses are tackled. This Chapter begins with an introduction highlighting nature of the Semiotic Icon, its types, and its place in Peirce's sign system. The second Chapter deals with the Semiotic Index of the Universal Qur’anic Verses. In which the Index Signs of these verses are accounted for. This Chapter starts with an introduction underlining nature of the Semiotic Index as proposed by Peirce. The third Chapter attends to the Semiotic Symbol of the Universal Qur’anic Verses. In which the Symbolic Signs of these verses are dealt with. This Chapter begins with an introduction underscoring nature of the Symbolic Sign, its types, its place in Peirce's semiotic theory, and the movement of its interpretants. The conclusion, however, summarizes the main ideas covered in the thesis along with the results arrived at by the present researcher. A list of the sources and references consulted in the study is presented at the end of the thesis.

Hence, this study is a record of the development of some syntactic views and continuity of the other views. The study discussed more than seventy syntactic views of Sibawayh which were mentioned by Abi Hayyan in his book. This paper could be the first step in the studying the views of grammarians who followed Sibawayh and who influenced this commentary. Therefore, the study is important for researchers who are interested in this field. The paper includes an introduction and four chapters. Abstract: The contemporary functional grammar theory could be sought in linguistic Arabic topics without resorting to or linguistic heritage including fundamental heritage which is the subject of our research. The study of both make us more justice for the efforts of fundamentalists from one side and updating our cognition from other side. The research falls into three chapters The first chapter : It deals with functional grammar and its method and that includes three units , the 1st unit : theory of verbal verbs. This theory has been established by the philosopher ( Austen) who was affected by the philosophy of (Fatgh Nishtien) in his theory (the linguistic bases) that being ensued from the philosophy of ( normal language). The most important aspect of this theory is the intend meaning, on other word ,it should know the intention of the speaker in order to know the meaning of speech. After that, (Siral) developed the theory of ( Austen) to classify the verbal actions s to actual actions either be direct or indirect. The second unit is the theory of (Ghutlub Furayjah), he investigated into Nouns in his book (( Use of accounting),the fundamentalists study main structure of word. The third unit is the context and intention , the linguistic event in the contemporary studies has been considered as a basis for that. The third chapter's 1st unit refers to the phrase and its function in structure , the rank , the omission. The change in the phrase components arrangement is for consistency, the subject might come in advance for the purpose of attracting attention or Mubtadaa might come first in the noun phrase for the same purpose. The fundamentalists were aware that the sentences' verbalizations might be conformed, but be different in meanings as to express speaker intention. Some of contemporary figures saw that expression is to uncover contextual relations ,the fundamentalists paid more attention to sentence analysis since the latter occupies high prestige, besides , the fundamentalists concerned with omission which is considered as a fallen element as that being imposed for the safety of sentence structure. The second unit is the predicting and composition sentence. Austen had distinguished between the descriptive and accomplished sentence. The fundamentalists had also distinguished between the predicating and composition sentences. The third unit assigned for an Order. The third chapter falls into two units , the 1st unit assigned for dialogue necessity and this related to the favor of the philosopher of the language (Ghryaz). The latter discovered the difference between (what is said and what is to be accomplished). The fundamentalists considered the dialogue necessity as conception through differentiating between the spoken and concept and the context has a big role to realize the meaning in the phrase. The other unit in the third chapter is the interpretation ,having a large role in tightening the text. It could be noted the similarity and difference between the contemporary and fundamentalist research, sometimes the latter surpasses the former due to its richness , but the contemporary characterized with accuracy despite the need to be investigated asto develop it.

Abstract: Knowledge of science is associated with the terms. It is the language of scientist and the scholars and the basis of study and research, because to take a thing out of mystery of the curriculum and its difference. Semantic is a branch science of linguistics that has its own terminology which is indicators of its meanings and themes for its importance in facilitating science. Semantic is an old science in its themes and objectives. However, it is new in its terms and means and in the development of other sciences. Arab linguists and scholars cared for it. They did not care however for the terms for the late linguists and the scholars of principles of logic. Some of them were intersected with the terms of Semantic (especially the denotation and the denoted). Semantic as a term for the conversationalist in Iraq began in the 19th century for MishalBeryal, and the terms were accepted by the scholars and the students alike. Semantic has many meaning and varied which is not limited and increasable according to the discretion of the scholars and their imagination and the Linguistic Complexities in the Arab states. The progress of time in the course of research in terminology and the appearance of many researchers and books and the difference of approaches and aims of the study that the scholars focus on a study other than the others. In addition to the nature of the work and the studying in them, all that led to change in the terms of the change in the terms and the emergence of chaos. In addition to that translation added many of the semantic terms which indicate availability in Arabic and its ability to communicate the scientific linguistic with other language. Some of these synonyms - the translated term - have poseda problem. The concept in the other language is not coinciding with the Arabic terms and the problem was doubled in the writings of the scholars. We find a portion of them writing the terms in English and other in French and German, some combine the two or three languages

I depended in stating that on the studies that were devoted to each of the types of replacement.Chapter One includes the concept of consistency in language and in terminology and the synonymous concepts and the means of the textual consistency, then the concept of language in language and in terminology. The second chapter is devoted to the nominal replacement and its application. Chapter three is devoted to the study of two types of replacement the verbal and the nominal and their applications. Then, I come up to the findings and the conclusions and recommendations. In order for the study to be compatible with the title, I included some poems and pieces of literature of the collections of those poets because they are not mentioned in another narration of the poets or they are attributed to another poet. It is known that every research is suitable with the knowledge branch to which it assumes. The researcher like any other researcher faced some difficulties that is due to the plenty of the terminology used in addition to that sometime there is a difference in translation from Arabic to English, in addition to the stylistics mistakes while translating and affecting in writing and translation. Therefore, I mentioned in the thesis examples of the Holy Quran and collected Dewan of the Moalaq’at seven poets. For the difference of the Arab scholars in their preference of the Moalaq’at seven poets and their non - agreement as a result of variance of the critical standards on which they depended. In addition to the difference of the literary taste from one scholar to another. I preferred to take the dates of their death of the Moalaq’at seven poets following the chronological sequence in their themes which include replacement as follows : Turfa ben Al - abd (D.540 AC), Amru’ alqais (545 AC), Al - harith ben Halza Al - Yashkuri (D. 570 AC), Amro ben Kalthoom Al - Taghlabi (584 AC), Antara ben Shadad Al - Absi (D. 600 AC), Zuher ben Abi Solma (D. 609), Lbed ben Rabia Al - Amery ( D. 41 AH - 661 AC).

Abstract: One of the reasons for choosing this topic is that the concept of condensation (old and modern) is the most outstanding feature of the language and one of the most important features of the innovation which the poets draws to is through capturing an idea or an event, a scene or an imagery that he means in a verse or a set of lines of verses. In general, we find this term is not new as there were many signs of it embedded in other terms such as (summarization and briefing), later this is known as condensation. We find that the poet includes usually many meaning in little as well as a condensation in imagery. On that term, condensation is an interesting theme for including the showing of lines that has been in immortalized. This study includes a preface which tackles the term of the two epoch poets; which is subdivided into two sections temporal, those who lived through the Pre - Islamic and Islamic and did not recite poetry during the latter period and the poetic section in which poets recited poetry during both epochs. Chapter One studies the condensation in the concept of poems in which we showed in various opening lines like (ruin lines, courting lines, imaginary lines and the youth and age). These opening lines were condensed by the poet aiming at attracting attention to his poem. In the Second chapter we showed the condensation in the purpose which is subdivided into (eulogy, apology, enthusiasm, praise, elegy, satire, wisdom and other purposes). They were represented in one line or many lines in which the poet declares his purpose through references and hinting. He was one of the diligent poets to choose the most condensed utterances for the large meanings. In the Third Chapter we stated three pivots in which the condensation is achieved : the first is the brief utterance with large meaning which shows the poets’ mastery of the use of these utterances that carried wide meaning and the second pivot includes the imagery condensation in which the poet condensed the uses of the simile, metaphor, and metonymy. The third pivot represents the condensation of cadence which is archived through the opening lines to which the poet has resorted to bring the attention. This would make it easier to memorize the line of verse and attract the attention to it. One of the features of the condensation is repetition which was an important feature as far as the Arabic poetry is concerned. Poets resorted to that to achieve what they desire through repeating and achieving cadence to the listener. The study ends with a Conclusion which sums up the findings of the study.

Abstract: The critical and academic studies demonstrated a great interest in the Arabic novel and exerted much efforts in the search, analysis and follow up of its different types, elements, artistic techniques, and narrative structure, that's why we proposed that our study be centered on the academic studies that focused on the Arabic novel through the search and analysis depending on criticizing the criticism. Our concern was limited to the M.A. theses in the department of Arabic in the University of Baghdad in the time period (2004 - 2013). The study has been divided into three chapters and twenty theses discussing in their content different concepts of the novel have been investigated. The study starts with a preface having three axes. The first has to do with literature, and the literary genres, and the second is related to the novel, criticizing and illustrating the stages the novel passed through since its rise until we received it the way it is and as has been studied in the thesis. The third axis contained an introduction of criticizing criticism, its concept and essentials. The first chapter (studying the contents and the subjects) has been divided into three sections introduced by a preliminary section clarifying the importance of the contents for the realistic novel in specific and for the novel in general. The study, in the first section, deals with subjects related to the (city and the society) dealt with by most of the university theses. The second section, on the other hand, dealt with the subjects related to (the exile, and the diaspora) after being considered by the academic researcher a phenomenon that pervade the Arabic novel in general, and the Iraqi novel in specific as a result of the wars and the policies of the governing regimes. The third section was dedicated to the (hero and the human models) that has a vital and fundamental role in the society and its social issues including the class, cultural and moral disparity The second chapter (studying the artistic structure) started with an introduction clarifying the importance of the narrative form in the structure of the novel. This chapter has been divided into two sections, the first one was dedicated to studying the artistic elements of the novel (time, place and character). The second section was concerned with studying the artistic techniques of the novel such as (ways of introducing the characters, a description and a dialogue) according to what the M.A. theses have addressed. The third chapter, on the other hand, (the viewpoint and the narrative structure) has an introduction clarifying the importance of the narrative structure and the importance of the narration. The chapter has been divided into three sections. The first section is related to the (narrative structure elements) including the narrator, the narrated, and a narrated to. The second section, in its turn, is related to (viewpoint and the narrative types) while the third section dealt with the (narrative structure) and what it implies of language, style, and structure arrangements. The research has ended with a number of findings listed in its conclusion.

Abstract: The Semantic Change is a subject that requires a lot of linguistic Flair , meditation and a full understanding of the theoretical aspects for anyone Who gets involved with its Scientific study. In this research,I made a good use of different Sources , Varied of Lexicons , Books of linguistics , and modern refrences. Concerning my plan , I have deals with Semantic Change in '' Diwan Abu - Tammam'' (Collection of poems ) in three Chapters Preceded bypreface and Followed by a conclusion. The preface Titted The Semantic Chang in Abu - Tammam, age is studied in two specific points ; the first : ''Abu - tammam , His life , poetry , and commentators of his poems the second : The Semantic change in his Time.Chapter one of this research deals with '' Semantic change'' as aconcept,it is characteristics, the development of semantic evolution. It is classified in totwo section, the first section includes : ''Idioms in linguistics, characteristics of semantic change and the equalization between semantic change and semantic evolution, whereas, the secnd section deals with reasons behind the seman tic change,so,Iclassified it in to two categories : '' the way we need '' and'' the way we use '' referring to reasons like ''misunderstanding '',obsolete words.vulgarity, shortcuts,''the influence of Islam,Metaphorical figures, the social and cultural factors and innovation. Concering chapter two titled '' Aspects of semantic change'',it consists of three sections : The first is '' generation of semantics'' ( exploration of meanings). The second is ''custommization of semantics ( it is promotion and declination ,in which I categorized it in to two basic lines : The first is '' customization of semantics '' and the second is ''the semantic promotion and declination ''.The third section '' semantic transmission '' in which, Idiscusses metaphor and it is aspects,I focuses on the aspects in terms of linguistics and idioms and I present some typical examples for each aspect.Chapter three titled : '' Semantic Relaships ''which was classified in to three sections included : - Section one : '' synonyms, linguistic differences Section two : ''Homonymy, Antithesis ''Section three : ''corresponding semantic ''In each of the above mentioned sections,Ipointed to each aspect in term oflinguistics and idiom, and the differences between the precedings and modern linguists on it is existence in language, reasons of it is existence, and then, typical examples on each section. Finally, there is the conclusion, sources and references used, and asummary in English. It is important to mention that the nature of this study depended on the descriptive and hystorical approach.

Abstract: The subject of the study deals with the search for "Biography of women in Iraq" proceeding from the fact that this topic highlights an important aspect of the literary and cultural product of Iraqi women, that is represented by autobiography, which is especially important in the modern age for it can introduce information on the lives of people and communities throughout important multiple historical periods, this autobiography side with the official history which is written by the authorities away from the people's pulses and pains that are often obscured, therefore this study comes to cast the light on important aspect of these biographical works and sought to expose the side of women's contribution in this area.In culture, the importance of biography subject, that is considered as literary art, which found its way, expanded and published in the Arabic culture in general and it scored success records in writing personal and public history for writers of biography and in different styles, so this topic has been chosen after reviewing a number of topics. And after researching, we found that studying feminine biography is very importance. The importance of this literary art in academic studies for the time being is because these biographies offer live testimonies for important historical areas. This claim can be confirmed by the large number of biographies which is printed daily worldwide and the global demand for acquiring this type of writing, so Ilooked for Iraqi woman to find where she put her footstep in this area and found that there is no academic study devoted to tracking the feminine product of biography in Iraq, while this biography reserves a paramount importance as a cultural and civil indicator of the developmental process of the Iraqi society progress with the beginnings of the woman's movement, which has devoted its efforts in the field of women's rights to teaching and education, which later on developed into a participation of women in political conflicts, and the witness on the historical stages experienced by Iraq starting from the Ottoman occupation, the royal area of Iraqi history and the struggle against dictatorial authority down to events of the years after 2003.Finally, the study aimed to reveal the reality of Iraqi woman in addition to the disclosure of the reality of writing the feminine biography in Iraq, as it is described as a part of the Iraqi cultural reality. The frame of the study dealt with 11 biographies of Iraqi women, whether the biographies are written by a man, an Iraqi woman or by non - Iraqi hands, they are all considered within the framework of the women's biography.Hence the research was divided into introduction and preface which dealt with women biography and awareness of writing. The research discussed writing biographies for a number of Iraqi women writers in an effort to disclose the presence of women Iraqi writers who wrote biography in a way that makes writing a biography is common in Iraqi culture, trying to present the problems with that type of biographies in a time with too many types which helped in putting a different pathway between men biographies and women biographies, through which women tried to get their freedom. - The first chapter (from the body to self), dealt with the status of Iraqi woman previously and how she was treated and how she sought to have an identity, in addition to the application on some biographical models. - The second chapter (feminine point of view), dealt with the narrator and how he became an external narrator once, internal or aware narrator at another time, which had been applied in some biographical models. May be the motive that made me stand on the concept of point of view and the narrator, even though they are criticizing point of views on which had been talked about with prolixity, is tendency of writing in the text of women biography, while she is trying to hide in order to narrate her biography in different styles, including what it contains of confession, taboo, and confusions, so that the narrator took an active role in narrating divertive texts of biography. - The third chapter (maps and concept of place in the women's biography), dealt with the place in terms of being locked or open which was shown that through the application on some biographical models. Finding that the place is the most predominant in this biography because of its relation with the woman who is a result of eastern culture which makes her prisoned in a closed place. The most prominent finding which our research reached is that the Iraqi woman possessed an identity. And proved her presence and became side by side with the man completing him , not behind or following him.
