Abstract: منذ قديم الزمان، تعتبر اللغة (الخطاب) كوسيلة مهمة التي من خلالها تمرر العقيدة. يستخدم الخطاب من قبل النخب الاجتماعية والقادة لنشر الافكار والعقائد في فكر العامة بالطريقة التي تخدم مصالحهم وتحافظ على هيمنتهم. تتناول هذه الدراسة تحليل الخطاب النقدي للعقيدة الامريكية تجاه عزلة قطر في مقالات افتتاحيات في صحف نيويورك تايمز، الواشنطن بوست و وول ستريت جرنال . تهدف الدراسة الى كشف العقائد المضمرة في ثنايا الخطاب والتي من خلالها يتبين التمثيل الحقيقي لعزلة قطر في هذه الافتتاحيات، حيث يكون اما تمثيلا ايجابيا او سلبيا. بمعنى اخر، هل المحررون لهذة الافتتاحيات يعتبرون قطر والولايات المتحدة الامريكية كعقيدة جماعة واحدة لتحالف متين والرباعية العربية المتمثلة بالسعودية، الامارات، البحرين و مصر هي العقيدة الخصم او العكس. استخدمت الدراسة طريقة شاملة لتحليل الخطاب النقدي والتي تعالج الروابط الرصينة بين الخطاب السياسي والعقيدة والسلطة والهيمنة. حيث انها اتبعت الخطوات الاتية في اجراء هذه الدراسة :- ا- اعطاء نبذة تاريخية عن مجال تحليل الخطاب النقدي بستليط الضوء على جذورة و الطرق الرئيسية المستخدمة في هذا المجال و مبادئه والمعنى الحقيقي للنقد. تسليط الضوء على نظرية العقيدة وتعريفها و تركيبها وتمثيلاتها الاجتماعية واليات عملها. ب- اعداد نموذج التحليل بشكل انتقائي من عالمين اثنين هما فان دايك (1991) و فيركلوو (1989) والذي يتضمن ادوات اعرابية ودلالية واسلوبية لاستخدامها في التحليل، مسبوقا بايضاح لطريقة عمل الافتتاحيات و التعريف بعزلة قطر. ج- اختيار عينه من افتتاحيات صحف نيويورك تايمز، الواشنطن بوست والوول ستريت جورنال والتي غطت ازمة قطر مع الرباعية العربية بعد قرار العزلة مع قطر عام 2017. ج-تحليل عينة الافتتاحيات وفق نموذج التحليل متبوعا باعطاء نسب و احصائيات النتائج، فهي تتبنى طريقة التحليل الكمي والنوعي والتي تحافظ على المعيارية والموثوقية لهذه الدراسة. وقد اظهر التحليل ان هذه الافتتاحيات تتصف بما يلي :- ا-انها استخدمت التمثيل السلبي لعزلة قطر اكبر بكثير من نظيرها الايجابي، حيث وظف المحررون وسائل لغوية لزرع التمثيلات العقائدية في عقول القراء. ب- اعتبرت قطر والولايات المتحدة كحلف واحد بعقيدة واحدة وان الرباعية العربية هي عقيدة الضد، وهذا انعكاس لتمثيلات عقيدة الهيمنة والسيطرة و الافضلية. ج- برهنت الدراسة امكانية اظهار العقائد المضمرة من خلال التحليل النقدي للخطاب باستخدام النموذج الانتقائي المذكور انفا. د- استخدم المحررون في نظام المشروطية معاني معرفية واجبارية كالامكانية و الاحتمالية والتاكيد، والضرورة و الرخصة من اجل التمثيل السلبي للازمة، كما استخدمو انظمة الافتراض و المغالاة في التعبير لدعم هذا التمثيل ووصف الرباعية العربية بالفاظ يفهمها الشارع الامريكي.

Abstract: One of the main reasons for the poor management of infrastructure projects is their complex nature, especially wastewater projects WWPs, and their reliance on traditional delivery systems in implementation, as well as a lack of acceptable techniques and methodologies to manage the delivery system, which negatively affects project performance in terms of cost, time and quality. The success of WWPs depends on select the optimal delivery system. This research aims to prepare a comprehensive management plan CMP for wastewater project delivery system using agile methodology. To achieve the aim of research, personal interviews with experts and a relevant literature review were conducted to collect the data. After that two forms of questionnaire were prepared, the questionnaire No. (1) was distributed on twenty projects under construction in the city of Alkut to determine the affecting factors on PDS selection, in addition affecting risks on PDS. While the questionnaire No. (2) was distributed to ten experts for conducting pairwise comparisons between the main factors on the one hand, and secondary factors on the other hand. The field survey was conducted using Geographic Information Systems GIS to determine the requirements of WWPs for unserved areas by develop two mathematical models using Multiple Linear Regression MLR techniques. The result analysis showed there are three main factors affecting on PDS selection such as project objective, owner requirement, and external conditions. The first main factor includes 15 sub factors, and three sub factors were selected based on relative importance index RII, they are (f3, f5, and f1) by (92.6%,90.6% and 84%) respectively. The second main factor includes sixteen sub factors, and (w1 and w3) were selected by RII (86.65% and 79.4%) respectively. The third main factor includes eight sub factors, and three sub factors were selected (m7, m2, and m1) by RII (86.9%, 82.9%, and 82.3%) respectively. These factors were adopted in design of conceptual model using AHP technique, the IV results showed that the optimal delivery system is (design-build) by highest degree of priority (Si) its (0.405) and the appropriate contract for this system is price incentive by AM (3.4). The proposed CMP was prepared using agile methodology, which consist of two main stages, planning and design stage, where the vision included identifying the requirements of WWPs, cost estimation, time estimation, and risk management plan using artificial neural networks ANN, and risk score method. While the construction stage, the vision included a set of proposed procedures to achieve roles of owner, contractor, and consultant. Thus, the proposed CMP was evaluated by a questionnaire was distributed to a group of experts, the results showed that the plan is applicable and its ability to manage the delivery system is good. Finally, the current research extracted a set of conclusions, the most important ones the optimal delivery system for WWPs is design-build. Several recommendations were suggested, the most important one is the rehabilitation and training of planners and decision-makers on recent methodologies and techniques related to mathematical models and statistical equations in the process of managing the delivery system.

Abstract: The communication management system(CMS) plays an active role in Iraqi consultant bureaus , the work of consultant bureaus characterized by a special nature which includes many barriers in the communication field such as a technical and financial barriers and the barriers that are related to communication management system efficiency (CMSE) . The purpose of this study is to asset and improve the communication management system in the engineering consultant bureaus , through the personal interviews that were conducted by the researcher with a group of engineers and consultants in the engineering consultant bureaus , has been identified a problem that is represented by high cost , time delay and weak performance due to use of traditional communication tools . A questionnaire form was prepared and distributed among fifteen(15) consultant bureaus in Iraqi Universities that represent population study , one hundred fifty (150) form were distributed and sixty eight (68) forms were received , and then analyzed statistically by statistical packages for social science (SPSS) program during the period between December /2015 till April/ 2016. The data were analyzed , the most of communication technology used in the consultant bureaus was the mobile at rate (82.35%) , and Facebook was the most social media used at rate (50%) , in addition (78%) of study sample confirmed that there were department to communication management system in the consultant bureaus , and (97%) of the study sample confirmed there are no program in the bureaus to train the engineers in the communication management system , the study refers to that the paper post is the most commonly used among consultant bureau and the top administration and the bureau and customer at rate (64.4%) , (50%) respectively . In order to evaluate and improve the communication management system , many solutions and suggestions were put to reduce the barriers that face these bureaus in the field of communication , by making communication management program(CMP) that is made by using (Visual Basic) language , through deriving a two main equations to measure the efficiency and the barriers of communication management system(CMS). III The (CMP) was verified by an evaluation questionnaire that was distributed among fifteen (15) engineers, it shows the result that all of study samples (100%) referred to the easy use of the program , and (73%) of study sample confirmed that the program discusses three issues of time , cost and performance , while the result showed half of study sample confirmed the accuracy of (CMP) to assess reality of CMS , then the analyzed result showed that (53%) of study sample shows that program is very good for both raising the performance among the staff of the C.B in the terms of importance . The program was applied to five consultant bureaus for the purpose of validation the program , and the researcher found the C.B of Al-Kufa University got a highest degree in (CMSE) and lower degree in (CMSB) , while the C.B of Diyala University got a lower degree in CMSE and higher degree in CMSB . The CMSE is increasing when reapplied the CMP and after taking in consideration the proposed tools in CMP . Finally the researcher can be rebuild the CMP by (HTML) in order to be available for all .

Abstract: Background: Considering the important role that the women play in health of both family and society, their health need to be considered as a priority. As girls enter adolescence, their activity levels dropping is indicated by as much as 83% as they make a transition to adolescence. This study aims to examine the efficacy of the Stage-Matched Intervention in enhancing female high school student’s readiness to engage in regular physical exercise. Methodology: True experimental (A randomized controlled trial started 2023/10/18 to 2024/6/5) of 144 female high school students aged 15-19-years who were randomly selected from a high school in Bagdad City )72 participants in each of the study and control groups). After accomplishing the pre-test, participants were classified according to their Stage of Change), the intervention (Targeting physical exercise behavior) was tailored, introduced to participants in each Stage of Change within 5 days. Results: The study results display in the pretest, most participants in the study group and control group were in the Contemplation Stage of Change. In the posttest I, more than a half were in the Action Stage of Change, followed by those who were in the Preparation Stage of Change. In the posttest II, more than two-fifths were in the Action Stage of Change. On the other hand, most participants in control group still in the Contemplation Stage in each of the posttest I, posttest II. Conclusions: The TTM-based Stage-Matched intervention positively influenced the students’ Stages of Change. Recommendations: Further studies that employ Stage-matched intervention that seek to enhance engaging in regular physical exercise need to be conducted by other researchers either inside or outside Iraq.

Abstract: Energy consumption is a significant challenge in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Compressed Sensing (CS) effectively reduces energy consumption but faces limitations, such as detecting a limited number of targets and assuming targets are on-grid. This thesis proposed using Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) for target detection in WSNs. SBL provided a model for off-grid target detection and also enhanced target detection accuracy and achieved nearly double the target detection compared to other methods like Basis Pursuit (BP). The SBL method successfully detected up to 30 targets with very high detection performance. In comparison, the BP method detected only 15 targets under the same environmental conditions. Two variables are considered in off-grid scenarios: displacement along the x-axis and y-axis. The Off-grid detection results demonstrate that the proposed approach, which incorporates dependent assumptions, can effectively localize targets within the framework of theoretical assumptions. This is in contrast to an approach based on independent assumptions, which may not achieve the same level of accuracy. Further, this thesis proposed an adaptive Sparse Bayesian Learning (A-SBL) approach to increasing the sensors’ lifetime in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). By combining the Bayesian model with adaptive compressive sensing (A-CS), the methodology minimizes the number of sensors required for successful target detection. Initially, a few sensors are selected randomly, and the Cluster Head (CH) then calls sensors that provide maximal information, achieving the greatest error reduction. This approach enhances resource use and energy efficiency, improving overall network performance. Results confirm that this method significantly reduces energy consumption v compared to other approaches, especially with fewer targets, contributing to advancements in WSN technology. Where The results show that the energy consumption of the A-SBL approach was 53% of the energy consumption by the traditional method when detecting 5 targets. As the number of targets increased to 15 and 30, the energy consumption dropped to 30% and 17%, respectively, compared to the energy consumed by the traditional method. Additionally, when the initial sensors were increased to 15 instead of 5, the proposed method’s energy consumption was 48%, 28%, and 17% for 5, 15, and 30 targets, respectively

Abstract: Summary Human Parvovirus B19 is an icosahedral-shaped virus that measures 18– 26 nm in size and has a single-stranded DNA genome. This virus causes medical conditions such as contagious dermatitis, arthropathy, fetal hydrops, and transient aplastic crises that can be spread via contaminated blood and blood products transfusions, respiratory droplets, organ transplantation, and vertical transmission from mother to fetus. The present study aims to detect the B19 virus by molecular and serological methods in patients with cancer, thalassemia, and viral hepatitis and study the relationship of parvovirus B19 with demographic parameters such as sex, age groups, and residency among the targeted groups of patients. This study targeted three distinct categories of individuals: those with each form of cancer, those with beta thalassemia major, and those with viral hepatitis. The study involved a total of 210 participants, comprising 60 patients with cancer (30 males and 30 females), 60 patients with beta thalassemia major (30 males and 30 females), and 60 patients with viral hepatitis (30 males and 30 females). Additionally, a control group of 30 individuals (15 males and 15 females) was included in the study. In the current study, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used for the detection of human parvovirus antigen. 16 (8.8 %) were positive, 164 (91.1 %) were negative, and all controls were negative (0.0 %). The study revealed that human parvovirus B19 infection was observed in 5.0 % of patients with cancer, 11.7 % of patients with beta thalassemia major, and 10 % of patients with viral hepatitis. However, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of the virus among patients with different types of diseases (p > 0.05). III In the hematological parameters between human parvovirus positive and negative cases in all enrolled patients, there was no significant difference in any of the parameters (p > 0.05). Of all the 180 patients with cancer, beta thalassemia major, and viral hepatitis who were tested by PCR for human parvovirus B19 DNA, 6 (3.3%) were positive and 174 (96.7%) were negative. The p- value showed no significant difference (0.597). Where 3 (5.0%) were positive in the cancer group, 1 (1.7%) in the beta thalassemia major group, and 2 (3.3%) in the viral hepatitis group. PCR analysis showed that none of the control group were positive, and no significant difference was observed (p > 0.05). Six viral DNA products or samples were sent to determine the sequence of the isolated viruses, and the sequence of six isolates was successfully determined, and the sequences were deposited in the GenBank according to the accession numbers: LC752262, LC752263, LC752264, LC752265, LC752266, and LC752267. Based on the results, the most common types of cancer cases detected positively with human parvovirus B19 were chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), breast cancer, and laryngeal cancer when using an ELISA test for B19 virus antigen. However, when using PCR, both non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were also found to be positive, in addition to laryngeal cancer. A significant difference was observed in the infection rate of human parvovirus infection in patients with beta thalassemia major between rural and urban areas, with higher rates in rural areas.

The radiological characterization by a gamma spectroscopy with a high purity germanium detector (HPGe) showed that LRWs were contaminated with Cs-137 radionuclides. The studied parameters in batch experiments method included pH (2, 5, 7, and 10), pumice weight (0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) g (pumice)/30 mL (radioactive liquid) i.e. (0.33, 0.83, 1.66, 2.5, 3.33, 6.66, 10, 13.33, and 16.66) g/L, mixing time (2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 60) min, mixing speed (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500) rpm, temperature (20, 30, 35, 40, and 50) ºC, and the initial concentrations of Cs-137 were (250, 842, 1326, 2424) Bq/L. The maximum removal efficiency was 91.75%, occurred at optimal conditions of pumice dose of 3.33 g/L, mixing time of 5 min, mixing speed of 100 rpm, initial Cs-137 concentration of 250 Bq/L, and temperature of 20 ˚C. At optimal conditionings, the isotherm analyses conform closer to Langmuir behavior than Freundlich isotherm. The regression factors (R2) were 0.96 and 0.91 for Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was fit for the experimental adsorption data. The thermodynamic model results were ΔS˚ of -155.14 kJ/mol.K, ΔH˚ of 91.45 kJ/mol, and ΔG˚ of -201.54 kJ/mol. The studied parameters of the single-stage, fixed-bed column process are bed thickness (0.2 and 0.4) cm, influent discharge (4 and 6) mL/min, and contaminant concentration (4623.33 and 19013.33) Bq/L. The results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity was 106.47 kBq/g, which was yielded at bed depth of 0.2 cm, influent discharge of 4 mL/min, Cs-137 concentration of 19013.3 Bq/L, and temperature of 20 ˚C. The Thomas and the Clark models were suitable to represent the experimental data where correlation factors R2 were 0.95 and 0.97, respectively. Based on the nature of the suitable models in both the batch and the fixed-bed column, the adsorption process took place on monolayer, heterogeneous surfaces, endothermic nature, less disordered, randomly increased at the interface layer, and was controlled by chemical interactions with active pumice sites.

Abstract: The use of Congo red dye in the textile, is a source of pollution. In this study, the adsorption removal of walnut shell powder as a bio-adsorbent for Congo red dye was evaluated. The surface of the adsorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area determination (BET), and pH point of zero charge (pHpzc). Four factors affecting the dye adsorption process were studied including pH, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, and contact time. The optimization study was conducted using the response surface methodology (RSM) by using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The results showed that the highest dye removal percentage was 83% with operating conditions of pH 2, an initial dye concentration of 25 mg/L, an adsorbent dose of 1 gram/100 mL, and a contact time of 90 minutes. Meanwhile, the dye removal percentage predicted by RSM was 85% with pH 2, an initial dye concentration of 31.32%, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/100 ml, and a contact time of 92.47 minutes. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to the experimental data. The results of the isotherm study showed that the adsorption conforms to the Langmuir equation with a value of adsorption capacity qmax = 35.11 mg/g. The kinetics of dye adsorption on the surface of walnut shells were studied by applying the pseudo-first-order model and the pseudo-second-order model. The results showed that the adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order model with R2 = 99.9. To increase the adsorption capacity of the walnut shell powder, the surface was modified in two ways: The first one was to convert the shells to nano diameter by grinding. while the second method was to prepare the activated carbon. Both methods gave high removal rates under the worst conditions obtained when using the material in its raw form, which were 92% and 98%, respectively. This study showed that the walnut shell is an effective absorbent material. It is economical to remove Congo red dye from water contaminated with this dye.

Abstract: This study explores domestic violence as a significant factor contributing to family instability, analyzing how it is represented in the media discourse of two distinct cultural contexts: English-speaking and Arabic-speaking societies. Specifically, the study examines press reports from the BBC (English) and Al-Arabiya (Arabic), offering a critical discourse analysis of their coverage. The primary focus lies in investigating the linguistic strategies each media outlet employs and how these strategies both reflect and shape societal perceptions of domestic violence. Additionally, the study examines the role of social and ideological beliefs in influencing the media's portrayal of domestic violence, particularly in relation to power dynamics and the potential justification or condemnation of abusive behavior. A further objective is to assess how the media's ideological positioning impacts the construction and dissemination of information regarding domestic violence to the audience. The study hypothesizes that English and Arabic media utilize distinct linguistic techniques, such as variations in lexicon and transitivity structures, which in turn influence public opinion differently. These linguistic choices are believed to be shaped by each society’s cultural and ideological framework. It is also hypothesized that English media tends to address domestic violence more assertively than Arabic media, given differences in societal openness and gender-related discourses. To test these hypotheses, an eclectic analytical model is adopted, combining Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework (1989, 1995), Fowler’s concept of language use and cultural imprint (1991), and Halliday’s transitivity and modality systems (2004). This model allows for a comprehensive analysis of selected press reports from both languages. A mixed-method approach is applied, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative techniques to ensure a nuanced understanding of the data. The findings reveal that in both cultural contexts, women are depicted as victims of oppression, but the underlying causes differ. In Arabic media, the oppression is predominantly linked to entrenched customs and traditions, while in English media, it is attributed more to historical gender inequalities and social dynamics. Furthermore, the analysis identifies clear differences in the linguistic strategies used. English reports tend to emphasize verbs and adjectives, constructing a dynamic and emotive narrative. In contrast, Arabic reports focus more on nouns and personal pronouns, contributing to a more static and culturally anchored portrayal. Both media types highlight physical abuse; however, Arabic reports give particular attention to verbal processes and cultural norms. Differences in modality usage are also significant: English reports frequently employ epistemic modality to express certainty and probability, whereas Arabic reports rely more on evidential and deontic modalities, reflecting differing cultural approaches to expressing authority, obligation, and judgment. Interestingly, the study finds that Arabic media offers more extensive coverage of domestic violence than English media. This is linked to specific cultural and legal factors, including concerns about privacy, family reputation, and community image. Despite these challenges, Arabic media appears more engaged with the topic, possibly due to heightened societal awareness. The study concludes with pedagogical implications, recommendations for media practitioners, and suggestions for further research into cross-cultural representations of domestic violence.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Syria and Turkey Earthquake that happened in 2023 was one the most devastating natural disasters that happened in the recent past and led to a great amount of suffering and destruction. Media news has a significant role in shaping the audience's attitude towards those affected by the crisis and those responsible for overcoming it. In addition to, the discourse of the news realizes the ideology of the news channels towards the governments and international institutions engaged through discourse. The current study analyses the English news discourse in well-known channel coverage displaying attitudes, dialogic positions, and ideologies constituting the discourses. It aims to identify the evaluative language strategies used in news discourse to portray the earthquake’s consequences and response efforts, as well as to examine the attitudes and stances presented toward governmental and organizational disaster management. Additionally, the study investigates the ideological positioning of news agencies regarding accountability and responsibility in crisis response, while also exploring the linguistic mechanisms, such as intensifiers, quantifiers, and emotionally charged lexis, that shape the audience's perception of the disaster. The hypotheses formulated for this study state that the articles show a negative attitude toward the consequences of earthquakes, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response speed and identifying what is seen as inefficiency in disaster response. Furthermore, it is postulated that the language within the articles amplifies the extent of the loss using intensifiers, quantifiers, and strong lexis with a view of passing on the emotions that are generated from the loss. It is moreover hypothesized that the dominant ideology is that governments are primarily responsible for the earthquake's failure. To conduct the analysis, the researcher adopts Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal System in nine news articles from three major international news providers: BBC, CNN, and Reuters. Conclusions drawn indicate that the data analyzed convey a largely negative perspective on governmental and organizational responses to earthquakes, emphasizing grief over the loss of life and property. The language used criticizes authorities for delayed and inadequate actions. The results highlight a tendency for news agencies to assert their objectivity through the frequent use of expand dialogic position and engaging readers using the disclaim dialogic position. This ideological appraisal places significant condemnation on governments for their inaction, with news media acting as public advocates that highlight negligence in disaster management. Ultimately, the study reveals how language and media representation shape societal perceptions of humanitarian crises and accountability.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The current study is concerned with a pragmatic study of attack and defense acts that are used by Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the American Presidential Debate in 2020. The attack is an attempt to harm or defeat someone, and it means that the speaker or attacker does not like or disagree with the other opponent. On the contrary, defense means a person responds to an attack of his or her opponent. After an attack, the president either negates or fact-checks claims made by his opponents or tries to set the record straight. Such reactions of presidents to attacks are sometimes referred to as defending, and they are designed to refute accusations made by rivals. The debate is being watched and heard by the audience so that presidents employ their attacks to persuade both the audience and the opponent of their beliefs, opinions, and attitudes. Presidents also use defense to know the reaction of the audience, whether they are satisfied with their words and policies or not. This study aims to fill the gap and reduce its negative consequences. Attack and defense acts are important phenomena and they have negative effects as well as positive effects. The study is expected to answer the following questions: What are the pragmatic aspects of attack and defense used in the political debates of American presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump? What are the reasons behind attack in the political debates? How do attack and defense acts of both presidents convey, directly or indirectly? What are the most frequent strategies of attack and defense utilized by the two presidents to formulate their speeches? The study aims to identify the usage of attack and defense acts in the American Presidential Debate in 2020 and focuses on the pragmatic analysis of attack and defense concerning illocutionary acts and impoliteness strategies. It also aims to identify the negative impact of an attack and the positive impact of defense and whether the presidents are succeeded in their defense against the attacker or not. In light of the above mentioned aims, the study hypothesizes that: first, both presidents utilize attack and defense acts as helpful tools to achieve specific purposes. Second, direct speech acts are more frequently used in the acts of both presidents than indirect speech ones. Third, President Trump uses attack and defense acts more than Biden. Fourth, the strategies of impoliteness used more frequently by Donald Trump than Joe Biden. Lastly, Trump is more prepared and disciplined than Biden during the debate. To achieve the aims of the study and verify the validity of the hypotheses, an eclectic model is adopted based on two models consisting of Searle’s (1975) "speech acts" and Culpeper’s (2005-2011) "impoliteness strategies". Before analyzing the data, the difference between attack-defense acts, the debates, and previous studies presented under the title theoretical framework. Then, a quantitative and qualitative research analysis with an overview of the collected data and biography of Trump and Biden are presented under the title methodology. The results of the study reveal that there are pragmatic aspects of language that can affect the usage of attack and defense acts in political debates of Trump and Biden like eye contact, facial expressions, and body language. The analysis also shows the acts of attack and defense which are identified to express the function of acts performed by both presidents. It has been noticed that both presidents Trump and Biden perform their acts directly to convey their beliefs, attitudes, and opinions towards each other's policy. Also, they use direct language to represent the factual, supportive and informative nature of the attacker or defender. Furthermore, the results of the analysis reveal that Donald Trump is the real master of impoliteness, but Biden, even when challenged with Trump's attacks directed at his family, frequently smiles, laughs, and shakes his head while closing his eyes. Both of them impose their presence and influence on the audience who watch them and attract their attention to the issues that they discuss during the debate.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The current study employs a linguistic comparative approach to explore the interplay between performative verbs, pragmatic features, and syntactic structure in American and British talk shows. As John Langshaw Austin theorized (1962), performative verbs are linguistic expressions that describe an action and perform the action they describe. The problem of the study is that Both American and British cultures share English as a medium of communication, but there are still cultural differences. The study aims to determine how cultural differences in the use of performative verbs influence the dynamics and effectiveness of American and British talk show interviews. By examining the types and functions of performative verbs across cultural contexts, the study will explore how language choices shape the interaction between interviewer and interviewee. The present study aims to identify performative verbs and their types and functions, how the interviewer and interviewee use them to interact with power and culture relations, how to manipulate these verbs to gain and set power during the interview, determine the types of sentence structures, investigate the co-occurrence adverbs with performative verbs. The study proposes hypotheses based on previous aims: 1) Interviewers and interviewees will prioritize performative verbs that drive persuasion and construct power dynamics. 2) Interviewers use authoritative verbs more during introductions, and interviewees utilize justification during self-presentation. 3) Interviewers utilize more emotional verbs to connect with the audience. 4) These verbs will be used in specific sentence structures. 5) Specific adverbs will co-occur with performative verbs. Based on the analysis results, the validity is verified by hypotheses (1-2-3-4-5). Two talk shows have been selected as data for studying American and British talk shows: “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and "The Graham Norton Show.” The study includes an eclectic model: Searle's (1976) speech act and Quirk et al.'s (1985) model of sentence types and adverbs functions. Mixed methods approach will be employed to achieve the aims and hypotheses of the thesis. The study concludes that American talk shows use reporting and describing performative verbs more than other types as they provide factual data and develop an objective point of view. While British talk shows convey information by reporting performative verbs, they are less concerned with personal opinions or assertiveness. The study reveals that culture determines the type of performative verbs preferred and how the options are conveyed. American talk shows are agreeable and persuasion-focused, while British talk shows are forceful and informative-looking. Adverbs co-occur with these verbs to strengthen or weaken their power. Finally, recommendations and suggestions for further studies have been proposed.

Abstract: Abstract Pragmatics is the study of language use in context and is crucial for effective communication. The pragmatic analysis includes verbal and nonverbal elements using different models. Understanding how verbal and nonverbal elements convey meaning enhances learners’ pragmatic competence. The current study aims to reveal speech act types and subtypes in the Iraqi EFL textbooks English for Iraq in the intermediate and preparatory stages, analyzing written dialogues, images, and audio to uncover verbal and non-verbal illocutionary force-indicating devices. The study also explores the ability of images to express pictorial acts independently of verbal elements and investigates the match between speech and image acts. It further examines the impact of audiovisual context on students’ pragmatic competence, comparing this impact between males and females, as well as students from the scientific and literary branches. The study uses mixed methods, starting the qualitative part by collecting data from the English for Iraq textbooks. An eclectic model for analysis is adopted, employing steps of content analysis to reveal speech act types and subtypes based on Krippendorff (2004). Three models are used to analyze speech acts in written dialogues: Searle (1979), Searle & Vanderveken (1985), and Searle (1969). For pictorial acts in images, four models are utilized: Schmitz (2007), Semiotics (Peirce, 1931), Pease & Pease (2004), and Knapp, Hall & Horgan (2013). Intonation analysis follows Roach (2009) using Praat (Version 2.2.01 - 2021). In the quantitative part, a questionnaire is conducted via Google Forms, including 41 MA and PhD students from the Department of English at the College of Art, the College of Education, and the College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul. A quasi-experimental design is employed with pre and post-tests involving 400 fifth preparatory students. It has been found that Iraqi EFL textbooks include different types and subtypes of speech acts, such as directives, expressives, assertives, and commissives, with no declarations. The findings show that various audiovisual elements such as gestures, facial expressions, signs, and prosodic features indicate the illocutionary forces of utterances. The findings also reveal the ability of images to express image acts without verbal utterances, and the match between speech and image acts depends on the explicitness of their elements in the context. Moreover, audio elements affect males' and females’ pragmatic competence equally, while visual elements impact females more than males. Finally, students of the scientific and literary branches are affected similarly. The study concludes that English for Iraq textbooks focus on pragmatic aspects of language teaching in Iraq, exposing students to various speech acts, types, and subtypes. Various audiovisual elements indicate the illocutionary force of utterances. Audiovisual elements impact students’ pragmatic competence, with statistical differences between males and females on the one hand and no statistical difference between students of the scientific and literary branches on the other hand.
