المستخلص: تؤدي الالعاب اللغوية دورا مهما في عملية التعليم والتعلم لكونها تسهل مواقف تعلم اللغة وتوفر مدخلات مفهومة وتمكن التلاميذ من التعلم لاشعوريا بشكل يرتبط بالمتعة والمرح في جو غير رسمي يجعلهم يشاركون في استخدام اللغة الاجنبية دون قيود. اضافة ا | Language games play an important role in the teaching - learning process since they ease the situation of language learning, provide comprehensible input, and enable pupils to learn subconsciously with enjoyment and fun in an informal atmosphere that makes pupils freely participate in using the foreign language. Moreover, language games have a significant role in increasing pupils’ proficiency and ability in using language with a purpose in the situation that they provide. Hence, the present study aims at : 1 - empirically investigating the effect of using games on the first intermediate graders’ achievement in pronunciation and spelling ; and 2 - developing pupils’ ability in these two areas. To fulfil these aims, two null hypotheses are postulated. They are : 1 - There is no statistically significant difference between the achievement of the pupils who are taught pronunciation and spelling through using language games and that of the pupils who are taught these areas through the conventional way. 2 - There is no statistically significant difference between the experimental group pupils’ achievement in the pre and posttests of pronunciation and spelling. To achieve the aims of this study, an experiment was conducted using the ‘pretest - posttest non equivalent groups’ experimental design. Two sections of thirty - six pupils each were randomly selected from Jareer Secondary School for Girls. One of these sections was also randomly assigned to be the experimental group (taught with the use of games) and the other to be the control one (taught without using games). The subjects of the groups were statistically matched in a number of variables. The researcher herself taught the two groups the same material, which is six units of NECI (Book III). The experiment lasted six weeks. Two achievement tests were constructed (a pronunciation test and a spelling test) based on a content analysis of the material taught during the experiment; thus their content validity was ascertained. Then the two tests were exposed to a jury of experts to ensure their face validity. Concerning the reliability of the two tests, several methods were used : split half, Kuder - Richardson formula 20, alpha Cronbach and intrascorer reliability, yielding reliability coefficients that range between 0.516 and 0.798. An item analysis was carried out for each test to determine item difficulty level and item discriminating power. Then the same tests were administered to the study subjects before and after the instruction. Using the t - test for two independent samples, it is found out that there are statistically significant differences in the pronunciation and spelling tests at 0.05 level in favour of the experimental group. The results also indicate that , using the t - test for two dependent samples, there is a significant development in the experimental group pupils’ achievement in both pronunciation and spelling tests.The researcher comes to the conclusion that using language games positively affects the pupils’ achievement in pronunciation and spelling and improves their learning in these two areas.In the light of the study results, a number of recommendations and suggestions for further research were made.

It emphasizes on the growth of individual's personality in its physiological, psychological, mental, and socrial aspects. Education and instruction enable the society to adhere to its values, traditions, heritage and to advance more and break all the barriers that prevent its development.This study stems its significance from the significance of the Arabic language itself, which is our national language and the language of Quran and people of paradise. Moreover, it is the language of social communication among nation's individuals. A language consists of many joined and integrated skills. One of the most essential skills is the correct articulation of speech.However, it is clear that learners are weak in language phonology as it is referred to by Al - Kesayi (189 H.), Al - Jahidh (255 H.), Ibin Jinny (285 H.). modernists also referred to this wealness such as, Dr.Rasheed Al - Aubaydy and Dr.Ahmed Abdul Haq Muhammed, Dr.May Fadhil Al - Juboory, and Sabir A.Jumaa. they believe that the reson behind this weakness is the deficiency in teaching Arabic phonology at both the basic level and at the college level Hence, there is a need to remedy This weakness in language performance starting from the initial stages of learning, i.e. from kindergartens and more specifically from the teacher of kindergartens who is responsible about which training learners at the initial stages.

These efforts prove that such scholars are fully aware of the nature of sounds and the speech organs which were accurately described. Laws and rules for sounds were set up and the relationship between these sounds were shown. These efforts and contributions are easily recognized by Abualaswad Al - Dwali's self - observation and Al - Khalil Bin Ahmed's classification of speech sounds. The latter described speech sounds from an articulatory point of view which had laid the foundation for a school called lexical phonology. In addition Sibawaihi classified Arabic speech sounds in terms of place of articulation. Such a classification gave rise to what is called the grammarians' school of phonology.It is beyond dispute that the subfields of Arabic linguistics are interrelated to one another and to the Glorious Quran. It is very rare to find a given topic which is for instance, purely morphological, i.e. other levels of linguistic analysis are in valued in it. Due to this characteristic, there is a variety of studies as far as the general attitude of works is concerned.The present study sets itself to gather the contributions of these schools of phonology and clarifies the procedures followed by the leading figures of each school. Such schools have been classified in the light of the aims behind studying the phonological material. Accordingly, five schools have been investigated in the present work. In addition, an introductory chapter entitled "schools of phonology and knowledge Heritage by Arabs' is devoted to the perspective of the study and how far it is applied to the schools of phonology by ancient Arab scholars.As for the first chapter, it is concerned with the school of "lexical phonology" and how those "lexicophonolgists dealt with the phonological material. The leading scholar here is Al - Khalil Bin Ahmed Al - Farahidi who was taken as an example by other lexicophonologists. The second chapter is devoted to the treatment of phonological material by Arab grammarians who gave rise to the "grammarians' school of phonology." within this school, the phonological study underwent development which started before Sibawaihi. It is true to say that the latter brought it to maturity. in his famous book " Al - Kitab". The third chapter is named as "The phonology school of Readers". The efforts of a group of scientists have been dealt with. Those scholars gave priority to the phonological study which farmed the basis for their investigations. The fourth chapter concerns itself with the treatment of the phonological material by some Muslim philosopher. They investigated the material from a physical and articulatory standpoint. Although such a school had lasted for a long period of time, it had not attracted a large number of scholars. Concerning chapter five, it has studied the phonological efforts of rhetoricians. These efforts have not been given due attention by previous studies. The study of phonology by those scholars is not a marginal one, rather it is serious and systematic. Al - Kahalil Bin Ahmed Al - Farahidi organized his dictionary (Al - Ain) on the basis of phonology to give the lexical units a phonological arrangements. As to Sibawaihi, he focused on the study of Arabic speech sounds in order to precisely investigate assimilation. He maintains that he described the letters of the dictionary so that one can recognize where assimilation is possible or not. Regarding the rhetoricians, they adopted a totally different approach to study sounds where the theory of articulation of sounds is considered as a rhetorical and critical criterion to judge whether a particular word is standard or not. Scholars of readings are concerned with how sounds are articulated or produced. The dealt with the distinctive features characterizing speech sounds. They also viewed speech sounds from a physical point of view
