Abstract: Visual messages have been used by human beings as a natural means for expressing themselves. For instance, in the prehistoric period and before the evolution of language, man produced myriad murals, rock inscriptions, and pictures (Pettersson, 1988, 141 - 142).Nowadays, photos and images also have a significant role in people’s life; especially with the vast advancement in mobiles and cameras technologies. The present study is thus concerned with the analysis of social detextualized caricatures to decipher thecontradiction between Gernsheim’s statement in that image language is universal and Fairclough’s (1992) in that images can be a source of ambiguity and creativity.Accordingly, the study aims at : First, identifying the non - linguistic denotative key - signs that build up the denotative meaning of the selected caricatures; and Second examining the impact of the identified non - linguistic denotative key - signs on the generation of the denotative meaning. To fulfill the objectives of the study, the cognitive semantic model, Domain Analysis, by Ronald Langacker (1987) together with the concept of denotation by Ronald Barthes in his model entitled "Mythologies" (1957) will be used. The dataselected for the analysis is (5) caricature images that reflect some of the social issues in Iraq. The analysis will take two forms : qualitative and quantitative. The main conclusions that the study arrived at are : First, the denotative meaning was grasped by some of the students, who share the same cultural background or who belong to the same province or state. Second, images as words are ambiguous; they convey layers of meanings. Thus, it is not precise to say that images have a universal language all over the world. Third, the impact of the non - linguistic key - signs is similar to the linguistic ones; simply because they have the ability to generate layers of denotative meaning. Fourth, students need to learn and develop their visual literacy; especially when they are living in the era of image and digital.

Abstract: تبحث هذه الدراسة المجاملات في المسلسلات التلفزيونية الاميركية.تعتبر المجاملة احد افعال الكلام الذي يلاحظ ويهتم بمصالح ورغبات واحتياجات المستمع. انها استراتيجية التادب تستخدم للتعبير عن حسن النية والتضامن بين المتكلم والمستمع, براون وليفنسون (1987). تعتبر المجاملات بمثابة المزيت الاجتماعي لاقامة او للادامة العلاقة بين الناس. تتناول هذه الدراسة تحليل لغوي تداولي لاثنين من المسلسلات التلفزيوينة الامريكية ربات بيوت يائسات والاصدقاء. وتم تنفيذها لتحديد العناصر المعجمية والانماط النحوية التي يتم استخدامها لاداء المجاملات، والوظائف، والمواضيع واستجابات المجاملات. وتوضح هذه الدراسة ايضا كيف يتم استخدام التعبير عن التادب باستخدام المجاملة. علاوة على ذلك،تهدف هذه الدراسة الى الكشف عن الفروق بين الذكور والاناث في استخدام المجاملات في المحادثات الامريكية - الانجليزية في هذه المسلسلات التلفزيونية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة ايضا الى تعيين وتحديد الانماط النحوية والمفردات المعجمية من المجاملات وتشير الى موضوعات ووظائف المجاملات. الى جانب ذلك، فانها تهدف الى تحديد انواع استجابات المجاملة. وتهدف ايضا لاظهار الفروق بين الرجل والمراة في استخدام والاستجابة للمجاملات. لتحقيق اهداف الدراسة، يتبنى الباحث لهذه الدراسة نموذج انتقائي. يتم تحليل الخصائص النحوية والمفردات المعجمية من المجاملات وفقا لنموذج ماينس وولفسون (1981). واعتمد تصنيف ماينس وولفسون عام (1983) لموضوعات المجاملات. الى جانب ذلك، يتم استخدام نموذج هولمز(1995) في تحليل وظائف مجاملات. وعلاوة على ذلك، تم استخدام تصنيفات كلا من هربرت (1986، 1989، 1990)، وهولمز (1986، 1988) وبومرانتز (1978) لتحليل استجابات المجاملة. واخيرا، اعتمدت هذه الدراسة ايضا نموذج استراتيجيات التادب الايجابية التي قدمها براون ويفيسون في عام (1987). وقد توصل الباحث على اساس هذا التحليل الى عدد من النتائج. اهم النتائج هي، ان استخدام المجاملات هي واحدة من اكثر الطرق شيوعا للقيام بالتادب اللايجابي ويظهر ايضا التمييز بين الجنسين والتي هي واضحة نسبيا بالمقارنة مع استراتيجيات التادب الاخرى. وفقا لتحليل الانماط النحوية والمفردات المعجمية للمجاملات, فقد اظهرت النتائج ان الانماط الاولى والثانية والثالثة هي الاكثر استخداما في كثير من الاحيان من قبل كل من الاناث والذكور في هذه المسلسلات التلفزيونية الامريكية. تشير نتائج العناصر المعجمية للمجاملات في المسلسلات التلفزيونية الامريكية الى ان المشاركون يستخدمون عددا كبيرا من الصفات الايجابية ويستخدمون ايضا انواع مختلفة من الافعال للتعبير عن التعابير الايجابية. وتكشف هذه الدراسة ان المجاملات على القدرة والاداء تفوق كل المواضيع الاخرى من المجاملات التي قدمها كل من الذكور والاناث. وعلاوة على ذلك، يستخدم كلا من الاناث (37.7٪) والذكور (18٪) من المجاملات للتعبير عن التقييم الايجابي والتقدير والاعجاب او الثناء على الاداء الاخرين والمظهر الخارجي والممتلكات او سمات الشخصية (55.7٪) في هذه المسلسلات التلفزيونية الاميركية. وايضا، يظهر التحليل ان كل من الذكور والاناث يختلفون في الاستجابة للمجاملات. تظهر النتائج الاجمالية ان استراتيجيات التادب موجودة في مجاملات المراة اكثر من مجاملات الرجال. في ضوء النتائج المذكورة اعلاه، تم وضع بعض التوصيات والمقترحات لاجراء المزيد من البحوث قدما .
