Code Switching is a prevalent phenomenon in bilingual communities denoting a way of talking in which participants alternate between two or more different languages either intersententialy or intrasententialy .CS has a bunch of various functions such as reiteration, translation, quotation etc.. The current study tries to investigate the different functions of CS employed in the medical register whose members are generally doctors and students. The data assigned for this study consists of two groups of participants : doctors and undergraduate students of medicine whose code switching behaviour is to be examined.This study aims at : 1. showing the sociolinguistic constraints on switching from English into Arabic and vice versa in particular medical situations. 2. showing the functions the switching may achieve in medical situations.3. showing whether the switches are mutually uttered or mainly doctorspecific.4. investigating whether a single switch signals a single function or multifunctions at a time, and5. highlighting the direction of the switch whether it is unidirectional, i.e., from the foreign language to the native one , or bidirectional.To achieve these aims, the following hypotheses are put forward : 1. the academic sociolinguistic constraints play a greater role than the personal ones.2. the most prominent function is the academic expansion function.3. nearly, all the switches are initiated by the doctor.4. a single switch may bear more than just one interpretation, i.e., it performs more than one function.5. almost all the switches in the data are unidirectional.To achieve the aims of this study the researcher adopts an eclectic model which is constructed in order to uncover all instances of CS. The model is derived from Gal (1979) ,Gumperz (1982), Grosjean (1982), Appel and Muysken (1987), and Zantella (1997). Two methods are employed in this study for data collection : qualitative and quantitative methods. With respect to the qualitative method, two procedures have been followed . First of all some intentional observations have been conducted on the part of theresearcher mainly to find out the way in which CS is used in the medical register. The second procedure is recording six two - hour lectures as a representative of the medical register as whole. Concerning the quantitative method , the switches in the six stages are examined to find out the frequency of CS in each stage. The main conclusions arrived at in this study are : 1. doctors use CS as a means of catering for the need for the students of understanding the subject matter. This point validates the first hypothesis which holds that the academic socio - linguistic constraints play a greaterrole than the personal one. 2. there are differences in using CS between the various stages. The various functions of CS are employed by doctors at all the stages. It is found that the most prominent function is expansion which contributes to the validation of the second hypothesis.3. nearly all the switches occurring in the data are initiated by doctors since he/she the dominant or the controlling figure in the lecturing hall. 4. some switches carry two or more interpretations depending on the context.5. almost all switches in the data are unidirectional. This is due to the fact that English is considered content - based which is typically used for instructing in the medical domain.6. CS occurs randomly and without any expectation or consideration to the kind of material , the gender of the teacher and the stage of the study . The differences in the results of analysis of each stage is not subject to fixedcriteria.
