Abstract: Books blurbs are considered as an individual genre, which has its own communicative purposes and linguistic features. More specifically, books blurbs are identified as a hybrid genre that belongs to a colony of promotional (advertising) genre. The main purpose of such a genre is not only to provide the prospective reader with information about what the book is about but it evaluates the quality of the book to make it more attractive to buy The current study aims to investigate the ways in which science books blurbs differ from or similar to literature books blurbs. It also aims to investigate the generic structure of books blurbs in terms of moves. Furthermore, this study explores the linguistics and what kinds of lexogrammar features are used in science and literature books blurbs. To meet these aims, this study focuses on fourteen science blurbs in different disciplines involving (Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Medicine, Biology, Computer Science and Agriculture) and fourteen literature books blurbs in four different disciplines involving (Novel, Drama, Poetry and literary criticism). These blurbs are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The data are analyzed by adopting Gea-Valor (2005) classifications of generic structure in terms of moves and linguistic features to identify the communicative purposes of books blurbs genre. In addition, Halliday’s transitivity system (2004) is adopted to analyze lexogrammar features for the purpose of identifying the communicative conventions of books blurbs genre. It has been hypothesized that science and literature books blurbs have a typical scheme of generic (rhetorical) structure and purposes. In addition, Blurbs are more promotional in nature than informational. Furthermore, science books II blurbs are longer; employ more familiar language when they are compared with literature books blurbs. The major findings revealed that, the variability between science and literature books blurbs is not highly marked, this imposes the controlled dynamism and flexibility in the integrity of books blurbs genre. Books blurbs are structured into different moves; each move performs a particular function. Different linguistic strategies are employed in science and literature books blurbs but imperative constructions are rarely used in science blurbs, it has been found only in computer science discipline while they are absent in literature blurbs. The texts of science books blurbs are longer than literature books blurbs. Science and literature books blurbs have the same tendencies in applying transitivity systems. Simple present and active voice are the dominant structures in both disciplines.

Abstract: تهتم هذه الدراسة بدراسة اهمية وتاثير السياق على تدريس تركيب المبني للمجهول. تتكون هذه الدراسة من خمسة فصول : الفصل الاول ويحتوي على مشكلة البحث وهي ان السياق لم يتم استخدامه حتى الوقت الحاضر وان طرق تدريس اللغة الانكليزية تعتمد بدرجة عالية على تقديم المعلومات واعطاء المحاضرات ولذلك فان هناك حاجة فعلية لتطبيق طرق حديثة في التدريس. اما اهداف الدراسة فهي استخدام السياق في تدريس تركيب المبني للمجهول والتحقق باستخدام التجربة لمعرفة مدى تاثيره على تحصيل الطلبة. وقد تم تحديد الدراسة الحالية على المرحلة الثالثة في قسم اللغة الانكليزية، كلية التربية، جامعة تكريت للعام الدراسي 2011 - 2012. وقد افترضت الدراسة ان السياق له تاثير ايجابي على تحصيل الطلبة في تدريس تركيب المبني للمجهول. كرس الفصل الثاني لتحليل وشرح مفهوم السياق، كما ويعرض هذا الفصل تحليل تركيب المبني للمجهول والعلاقة بينه وبين السياق اضافة الى الدراسات السابقة المتعلقة بالمبني للمجهول. يتناول الفصل الثالث اجراءات الدراسة والتي تتضمن تصميم التجربة واختيار العينات، فقد قام الباحث باختيار مجموعتين الاولى المجموعة التجريبية والتي تم تدريسها باستخدام السياق، والمجموعة الاخرى المجموعة الضابطة والتي تم تدريسها باستخدام اسلوب اعطاء المحاضرات. وقد تكونت كل مجموعة من (20) طالبا وقد تم اجراء تكافؤ لكلا المجموعتين من حيث العمر والتحصيل الدراسي للابوين. وقد تم اجراء اختبار تحصيلي في نهاية التجربة لمعرفة اداء الطلبة والذي اوضح ان هناك افضلية ملحوظة للمجموعة التجريبية. اما الفصل الرابع فيتناول تحليل نتائج الدراسة والاحصائيات التي استخدمت في هذه الدراسة وكذلك مناقشة النتائج. تضمن الفصل الخامس الاستنتاجات من هذه الدراسة معتمدا على نتائج التجربة. وفي هذا الفصل توصل الباحث الى بعض الاستنتاجات المهمة والتوصيات. كذلك بعض المقترحات للدراسات القادمة. اما نتائج هذه الدراسة فهي : 1. هناك فرق واضح بين المجموعة التجريبية والمجموعة الضابطة من خلال مقارنة درجات الطلبة في الاختبار القبلي والاختبار البعدي.2. ان تدريس تركيب المبني للمجهول باستخدام السياق له تاثير على اداء الطلبة وهذا واضح من خلال نتائج الاختبار البعدي للمجموعتين.اما التوصيات التي استنبطها الباحث من نتائج الدراسة فهي : 1. يجب ان تطبق طرق حديثة في التدريس والتي من شانها خلق التفاعل بين الطلبة من اجل توضيح المادة وسهولة استيعابها.2. يجب ان بدرب المعلمين على استخدام الطرق الحديثة في التدريس وترك الطرق التقليدية التي تؤثر على استيعاب الطالب.3. يجب ان يشجع المعلم الطلبة على التفاعل في الصف والمشاركة من اجل تسهيل عملية التعليم.اما المقترحات فهي : 1. من الممكن القيام بدراسة مماثلة باستخدام السياق لمعرفة تاثيره على انواع اخرى من القواعد كالازمنة مثلا او الكلام المباشر وغير المباشر.2. من الممكن القيام بدراسة مماثلة على طلبة الثانوية لمعرفة تاثير السياق على ادائهم. | This study is concerned with the concept of context and its effect on teaching passivization, The study has been divided into five chapters : Chapter One includes statement of the problem, that context is not applied up to now and the methods of teaching English depend highly on teachers presenting the information and giving lectures. So there is a real need to apply new ways of teaching. The aims of the study are : using context in teaching passive voice construction, and investigating empirically the effect of using context on students' achievement. The present study is limited to the third year students, College of Education, Tikrit University at the Academic year 2011 - 2012. The study hypothesizes that there is either a positive effect of using context on the students' achievement, or there is no effect of teaching passive voice contextually. Chapter Two is devoted to the analysis and explanation of the concept of context. This chapter is also concerned with a syntactic analysis of English passive construction and its relation with context, and the previous studies which are related to passive voice. Chapter Three consists of the procedures of the study which includes the design of the experiment, the selection of the sample and the statistical tools used. In the selection of the sample , the researcher has chosen two groups, one is the experimental group which is taught by using context, and the other is the control group which is taught by lecturing. Each one of them consists of (20) students, both of them have been equalized in age, and the parents' level of education. An achievement test has been conducted to estimate the students' performance at the end of the experiment which shows a noticeable superiority for the experimental group. Chapter Four is dealing with an analysis of data and discussion of the results. Chapter Five undertakes the conclusions of the study depending on the results of the experiment. In this chapter, the researcher has arrived at some important conclusions, recommendations, and suggestions for further studies. The conclusions of the present study are : 1. There is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups through comparing the pre and post test mean scores.2. Using context in teaching passivization has a significant effect on students' achievement.Recommendations1. New ways of teaching should be applied which lead the students to communicate in order to facilitate the students comprehending.2. Teachers should be trained to be able to use modern teaching techniques and instead of traditional ways of teaching.Suggestions1. A study can be conducted to find the effect of using context on other language constructions, such as tenses, direct and indirect speech.2. A study can be conducted to find out the effect of context on students' achievement in secondary schools students.

Abstract: نال موضوع الاسلوبية اهتماما" كبيرا" في السنوات الاخيرة من قبل اللغويين،محللي النصوص ونقاد الادب ، وهذا بدوره دعى المتخصصين في الدراسات الادبية الى تطبيق المناهج التي تعتمدها الاسلوبية في دراسة النصوص الادبية . تناولت الدراسة الحالية ثلاث من قصص همنغواي القصيرة وتهدف الى بيان الخصائص المميزة لاسلوبه وهي تلال تشبه فيلة بيضاء ، قطة في المطر ، مكان مضاء جيدا" ونظيف، فضلا" عن ذلك فانها تهدف الى بيان اثر استخدام بعض الادوات اللغوية في اسلوب كاتب القصة القصيرة . تفترض الدراسة ان همنغواي يستخدم بعض الادوات اللغوية والاسلوبية فضلا" عن استخدام تقنيات السرد الاخرى في كتابة القصة القصيرة والتي تميز اسلوبه في الكتابة . تقع الدراسة الحالية في اربعة فصول . يتناول الفصل الاول الذي يشكل مقدمة البحث عرضا" موجزا" لطبيعة المشكلة،وفرضيات البحث،واهدافه،كما يوجز الحدود التي يقف عندها البحث،ومادته،ومنهجه،واهميته . يهدف الفصل الثاني الى تقديم عرض للادبيات المتوفرة حول موضوع الاسلوبية . كما يبحث علاقة الاسلوبية بالنقد الادبي ، وكذلك يقدم بعض مناهج التحليل الاسلوبي لنصوص النثر بهدف تبني منهج للتحليل في الفصل اللاحق . فضلا" عن ذلك فان الفصل الثاني يستعرض عناصر القصة القصيرة والخصائص الاسلوبية لطريقة همنغواي في الكتابة .اما الفصل الثالث فيمثل تحليلا" لغويا" واسلوبيا" لثلاث من قصص همنغواي القصيرة من خلال تطبيق الاصناف اللغوية والاسلوبية في منهج . Leech and Short (1981) وفي الفصل الرابع ، فان الدراسة تقدم عرضا" موجزا" لاهم النتائج التي افرزها التحليل اللغوي والاسلوبي في الفصل السابق . فضلا" عن تقديمها مجموعة من التوصيات التي من المعتقد ان تكون مفيدة للطلبة المتعلمين للغة الانكليزية كلغة اجنبية وفيما ياتي اهم الاستنتاجات التي توصلت اليها الدراسة : 1. يستخدم همنغواي طرق عرض الكلام والافكار كوسيلة لتنويع وجهة نظره ،اتجاهه،وبعده عن النص .2. يستخدم همنغواي الطرق المباشرة في عرض الكلام اكثر من الطرق غير المباشرة .وفي هذا الصدد فان الكلام الحر غير المباشر هو الوسيلة الاكثر شيوعا" عند ابطال همنغواي من بين الطرق غير المباشرة .3. بالرغم من كون اسلوب همنغواي يبدو سهلا" فانه فعال وتعزى هذه الفاعلية الى استخدامه لبعض الادوات الاسلوبية وتقنيات السرد .4. يستخدم همنغواي الكلمات الدليلية لغرض احداث تاثير معين على القارئ .5. يستخدم همنغواي تكوين الصورة الامامية في قصصه القصيرة كوسيلة لجعل بعض التفاصيل اكثر ظهورا" للعيان .6. تستخدم تقنية الملاحظ المباشر في السرد بشكل واسع في قصص همنغواي . | In recent years, the topic of stylistics has received more attention from linguists, text analysts and literary critics. This leads specialists to apply the procedures of stylistics in literary studies in studying literary texts. The present study is an investigation of some of Hemingway’s short stories. It aims at pointing out the distinctive stylistic features of Hemingway’s style in three of his short stories .They are : Hills Like White Elephents, Cat in the Rain, and A Clean Well - Lighted Place. It also aims at showing how the employment of some linguistic devices affects the style of a writer. In the present study, it is hypothesized that Hemingway uses some linguistic and stylistic tools in addition to other fictional techniques in writing short stories which distinguish his style. The present study falls into four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction which presents the problem, the hypotheses, the purpose, the procedures, the limitation of the study, and its value. Chapter two surveys the available literature on style and stylistics. It also explores the relation between stylistics and literary criticism as well as it presents some models of stylistic analysis related to the analysis of prose texts. In addition to that, the chapter shows the characteristic features of Hemingway’s code in writing. Chapter three is a linguistic and stylistic analysis of three of Hemingway’s short stories by applying the linguistic and stylistic categories of Leech and Short’s model (1981). Chapter four presents the conclusions arrived at through the linguistic stylistic analysis in chapter three. It also suggests some recommendations which are supposed to be of benefit for the students of English as foreign language.The most important conclusions arrived at are as follows : 1 - Hemingway employs speech and thought presentation as a means of varying point of view, tone, and distance. 2 - Hemingway employs direct methods of speech presentations more than the indirect ones. In this regard, free indirect speech is the most common method used by the protagonists among the indirect ones.3 - Though Hemingway’s style is obstensively simple, it is effective. This effectiveness is attributed to the use of some stylistic devices and fictional techniques.4 - Hemingway uses key words in order to create a certain effect on the reader. 5 - Hemingway employs forgrounding in short stories in order to make certain details more conspicous6 - The direct observer technique of narration is always used in Hemingway’s short stories.
