Abstract: Abstract Pragmatics is the study of language use in context and is crucial for effective communication. The pragmatic analysis includes verbal and nonverbal elements using different models. Understanding how verbal and nonverbal elements convey meaning enhances learners’ pragmatic competence. The current study aims to reveal speech act types and subtypes in the Iraqi EFL textbooks English for Iraq in the intermediate and preparatory stages, analyzing written dialogues, images, and audio to uncover verbal and non-verbal illocutionary force-indicating devices. The study also explores the ability of images to express pictorial acts independently of verbal elements and investigates the match between speech and image acts. It further examines the impact of audiovisual context on students’ pragmatic competence, comparing this impact between males and females, as well as students from the scientific and literary branches. The study uses mixed methods, starting the qualitative part by collecting data from the English for Iraq textbooks. An eclectic model for analysis is adopted, employing steps of content analysis to reveal speech act types and subtypes based on Krippendorff (2004). Three models are used to analyze speech acts in written dialogues: Searle (1979), Searle & Vanderveken (1985), and Searle (1969). For pictorial acts in images, four models are utilized: Schmitz (2007), Semiotics (Peirce, 1931), Pease & Pease (2004), and Knapp, Hall & Horgan (2013). Intonation analysis follows Roach (2009) using Praat (Version 2.2.01 - 2021). In the quantitative part, a questionnaire is conducted via Google Forms, including 41 MA and PhD students from the Department of English at the College of Art, the College of Education, and the College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul. A quasi-experimental design is employed with pre and post-tests involving 400 fifth preparatory students. It has been found that Iraqi EFL textbooks include different types and subtypes of speech acts, such as directives, expressives, assertives, and commissives, with no declarations. The findings show that various audiovisual elements such as gestures, facial expressions, signs, and prosodic features indicate the illocutionary forces of utterances. The findings also reveal the ability of images to express image acts without verbal utterances, and the match between speech and image acts depends on the explicitness of their elements in the context. Moreover, audio elements affect males' and females’ pragmatic competence equally, while visual elements impact females more than males. Finally, students of the scientific and literary branches are affected similarly. The study concludes that English for Iraq textbooks focus on pragmatic aspects of language teaching in Iraq, exposing students to various speech acts, types, and subtypes. Various audiovisual elements indicate the illocutionary force of utterances. Audiovisual elements impact students’ pragmatic competence, with statistical differences between males and females on the one hand and no statistical difference between students of the scientific and literary branches on the other hand.

Abstract: تعنى هذه الدراسة بظاهرة التنغيم في اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة. والتنغيم ميزة لغوية فوق صوتية (suprasegmental) تلعب دورا حيويا في لغة الكلام، لانها تعطي الالفاظ معاني لا يمكن الاستدلال عليها من مجرد معاني الكلمات او تتابع الاصوات والكلام في الجمل. ان الالفاظ والعبارات التي لا تستخدم التنغيم المناسب تكون سببا في كثير من سوء الفهم او ترجمة غير ملائمة لافكار ومشاعر المتكلم.ان كون التنغيم جزء حيوي من اللغة امر يتفق عليه الجميع في يومنا هذا. وهي حقيقة استحوذت على اهتمام الباحثين والمهتمين باللغة ودفعت بهم الى دراسة او معالجة بعض المشاكل التي تكتنف هذه الظاهرة المعقدة، وباستثناء بعض المحاولات الجادة لدراسة التنغيم في بعض اللهجات العربية يبقى التنغيم في اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة مجالا لم يدخله الا القليل من البحث. ومن هنا جاءت هذه الدراسة في محاولة لتحليل ووصف انماط التنغيم ولبيان بعض الوظائف النحوية والدلالية التي تؤديها اضافة الى دراسة العلاقة بين هذه الانماط وبعض انواع الجمل الرئيسية مثل الخبرية والاستفهامية والامرية والتعجبية، كما تهدف الدراسة الى مقارنة انماط التنغيم في العربية مع تلك في اللغة الانكليزية.ثم اخذ نماذج مسجلة صوتيا من العربية الحديثة ومن مصادر مختلفة وتم تحليل هذه الانماط سمعيا وادراكيا باتباع المنهج الذي اقترحه العالم اللغوي كريستال (1969). اظهرت نتائج الدراسة ان اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة تستخدم كل انواع النغمات البسيطة والمعقدة والمركبة الرئيسية فضلا عن نغمات اخرى ثانوية. كما اظهرت عدم وجود ترابط ثابت بين نغمة معينة ونوع معين من انواع الجمل في العربية وانما قد يكون هناك ميل لارتباط نغمة مع نوع من انواع الجمل. كما بينت الدراسة ان وظائف التنغيم في اللغة العربية مترابطة ومن الصعب فرز وظيفة معينة لنمط تنغيم واحد، وبالاخص وظيفة التنغيم التي ترتبط بمواقف او حالة المتكلم.جاءت الدراسة في سبعة فصول وملحقين وقائمة بالمصادر. الفصل الاول يعرف بالتنغيم واهميته والحاجة الى دراسته كما يعرف باهداف الدراسة وحدودها وطبيعة مادة البحث فضلا عن التعريف باهم المصطلحات التي وردت في الدراسة. الفصل الثاني يستعرض اهم الدراسات التنغيمية في اللغتين العربية والانكليزية التي اجريت في القرن الماضي. اما الفصل الثالث فيستعرض خصائص اللغة فوق الصوتية التي لها علاقة مباشرة بالتنغيم مثل درجة الصوت (pitch)، ارتفاع الصوت (Loudness)، امد الصوت (duration)، سرعة الايقاع (tempo)، التوقف (pause)، النبر (stress)، انتظام وايقاع الكلام (rhythm)، فضلا عن تركيب المقطع (syllable structure) الذي يقع التنغيم عليه. اما الفصل الرابع فيهتم بتحليل مكونات المجموعة او الوحدة التنغيمية (tone group) مثل مركزا ونواة المجموعة (nucleus)، ذيلها (tail)، وراسها (head)، وما قبل الراس (prehead) من مقاطع. ويعرض الفصل بعض المشاكل التي ترافق تحديد هذه المكونات وخاصة في لغة الكلام الطبيعي التلقائي. واحتوى الفصل الخامس على اهم وظائف التنغيم مثل تلك التي تعكس موقف وشعور المتكلم، وظيفة النبر والوظيفة النحوية، ووظيفة التنغيم في الخطاب. اما الفصل السادس فيهتم بدراسة اهم انماط التنغيم التي تستخدم في اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة وقد تم تحليل هذه النغمات حسب درجة الصوت ووظيفة تلك النغمة في عكس موقف المتكلم. ولقد افرزت الدراسة نغمات مختلفة بسيطة ومعقدة ومركبة. كما يحاول الفصل تحديد الوظائف النحوية والدلالية لهذه النغمات وتحديد طبيعة العلاقة بين هذه النغمات من جهة وانواع الجمل الرئيسية من جهة اخرى، كما تمت الاشارة الى ما يقابل هذه النغمات في اللغة الانكليزية. اما الفصل السابع فيقدم نتائج الدراسة وبعض التوصيات والمقترحات لدراسات مستقبلية في التنغيم. | Different systems for marking intonation have been used in the literature. A writer adopts a notational system that suits his needs in presenting intonation graphically which differs from those of other writers. Some of the well - known systems are the linear, the numerical, and the diacritic.Bolinger, for example, used the linear system by printing the word on a curve (see 2.3.5). Hence, he shows the movement of pitch on a line. He prints the ordinary letters of English with rise of pitch represented by higher printed letters and vice versa. Pike and Al - Ani, for example, use the numerical system,. i.e. they use numbers to represent a certain tone or level (see 2.3.2 and 2.5.2.1 f). The diacritic notational system is the one that is more in common use especially in the British tradition. It is the one used by such intonationists as Kingdon (1958), Crystal (1969), O’Connor and Arnold (1973), Ghalib (1977), and Roach (1983), among others. This system makes use of diacritical phonetic marks over words and letters which facilitate the reading of examples of intonation.This study uses the diacritical intonation marking system. Specifically, it uses a diacritical system similar to that used by Ghalib (1977 : V) with some modifications. Ghalib’s system “avoids complexities in transcription” (and has) “the advantage of using the smallest number of symbols”.1. The Supra - segmental notation.A system of big and small dots is used in the diagrams for the examples given in this study. The big dots stand for the stressed syllables, the small ones stand for the unstressed syllables. The conventional tonal symbols ( ΄ ¯ ˇ ˆ ) are used to show the pitch movements of fall, rise, level, fall - rise, and rise - fall respectively. In addition, the primary stress mark ( ' ) is used before and above the stressed syllable.
