Abstract:
land reclamation is one of the key factors in supporting the sustainable rural development by providing the economical activities requirements which are important for the stability of the rural population, particularly the agriculture, as well as the necessary services for the sustainability. Therefore, the concept of land reclamation needs to be extended to include all life facilities (economic, social , physical and environmental facilities). For this reason, the sustainable rural development is an absolute necessity. Therefore, the importance of the current study starts from the fact that land reclamation plays an important role in raising the agricultural production and food security, particularly in the countryside. Hence, the possibility that land reclamation leads to agricultural development that could be the economic foundation of the countryside. Therefore, this study focused on analysing land reclamation projects and whether they achieve the rural and agriculture development and thus the land reclamation contribute partially to the integrated rural development. This study aims to reveal the role of the land reclamation in the rural development and it was structured into three chapters. Chapter one contains a theoretical background and a literature review and it was divided into two sections; section one dealt with the spatial sustainable development in terms of concept and objectives, constraints, principles and theories. It also addressed the concept of rural development principles and its constraints, land reclamation concept and its objectives, types, its relationship and its impact on sustainable agricultural development. The other section of this chapter was devoted to Iraq and deals with rural development and the past sustainable development plans and the elements to achieve the goals and the reclamation between the past and present in Iraq, its importance, policies, patterns of policies, agricultural development and trends, as well as agricultural development and rural development strategies and goals, with some international and Arabic experiences in land reclamation and its impact on rural development. Chapter two has two sections, section one includes the reality of the situation of the study area, highlighting the potential and natural and human resources. The second section deals with Al - Dujailah reclamation project, part of Wasit district, and determine the effect of reclamation in rural spatial sustainable development. The research results could be found in chapter three. Through a questionnaire prepared and approved by the researcher in the field study by comparing the results with goals through economic, social, physical and environmental indicators. Then the conclusions and recommendations : the land reclamation is the basis for the sustainable development through its association with the clear emergence in the following aspects, economy, socially, urban and environmentally. As well as the richness of the study area with several economical, agricultural and industrial factors. This study recommended that exploitation and investment of sustainable development, which will be reflected demographically and economically in the region in particular, and on the development of the region in general as well as the interest in reclaimed land, and follow up the reclamation process for the sustainability of the land and investment areas is reclaimed to increase the productivity of the land and the approved industry support on what is available from materials preliminary plant, animal and to improve the economic situation of the inhabitants of the region and raise the standard of living, which is an important factor in the stability of the population
