Abstract:
The grammatical schools subject is one of the important topics in the history of the Arabic grammar. This subject was already dealt with by the ancient Arabic writers beside those interested in the eastern matters who wrote on the basis of what the ancient writers thought. The number of such schools was only guessed at without the necessary academic authority. The modern writers, however, examined the opinions of their predecessors. Therefore, their observations only resulted into different opinions that they came to classify the grammatical schools into five : Basrhia, Kufia, Baghdadia, Andlusia, and Massria. While others, classify the grammatical schools into two : Basrhia school and Kufia school. whereas few others did not consider but only the so - called Basrhia. The contemporary writers concerned with the history of such schools, shed light on their bases, their founders, and show the difference among those schools. The present study sheds light on the grammatical schools written by the contemporary linguists who dealt with the history of those schools, their methods in studying grammar and linguistics and the diversity among them. The present study fulls into : abstract, introduction and three chapters. The abstract for the fields and scope of the study while the introduction focused on the foundation of the Arabic grammar, its founders, motives and originality. Chapter one accounted for the so - called “Mathhab” or “School” in the hands of researchers, and chapter two gave a general scope of the studied schools. Chapter three concerned with showing an analysis of the books written within the grammatical schools. However, it is divided into two sections : Section one dealt with the strategy of the authors with in the scope of the grammatical schools. Section two dealt with a study of the grammatical school books and showed the balance involved. However, the study reached at the following conclusions : 1. The founder of the Arabic grammar was Abu - AL - Aswad AL - Da ,lly (69, Higri) and the motives of its foundation could be accounted for in terms of various factors : religious factor, national, political and social.2. Various terms are used to refer to the so - called “Mathhab” or “School”. They are different terms but they preserve the same meaning, therefore it is better to stielc to the so - called “Mathhab”. 3. In terms of the so - called “Mathhab”, two among which are only admitted : AL - Bashri and AL - Kufi only
