Abstract: It includes the introduction to the subject and the importance of the research. It talks about the basketball as it represents the competitive activities that received considerable development in all aspects including the skillful ones, and the basketball game needs several requirements, including the physical and kinetic abilities as well as skills development that are associated with those physical and motor abilities. The player should be trained on those capabilities precisely to get to the good preparation for the player and the team by using the exercises of functional strength in the basketball game, training on those methods take the form of motor performance that's focus on both sides of strength and balance, which is not used in the local environment, through which the researcher thinks that these capabilities will contribute to the development of skills for the basketball game, which leads to improving the player's level of performance during competition and achieve victory. The researcher took the subject ofABSTRACTIIIfunctional strength to reach modern scientific facts that the researchers should have benefit from it and train the players to serve the practical aspects of the basketball game.The problem of the research appeared from the researcher's slow observation in achieving the duties of offensive and defensive skills, the researcher finds that the youth players have low levels of physical and motor abilities and performance skills, through the use of one exercise that lead to develop of only one ability during the exercise for preparation of the player, and that will take longer time to develop player's ability.So, the researcher suggest to use of functional strength training style to learn the extent of this style and its impact on dependent variables, the fact that this method does not take place by the studies in the field of basketball in the Iraqi environment.The aim of the research is to set up a program for functional strength training for young basketball players that suits the capabilities of the research's sample.The researcher supposed that there were significant statistical differences between the pre and post tests for the control and experimental groups in testing the physical, motor, and skills abilities, and the presence of significant statistical differences between the post tests of two experimental and control groups in the physical, motor, and skills abilities tests.2 - Chapter Two : Includes Two Sections : The first section deals with theoretical studies which had several issues such as (Offensive and defensive skills in basketball, Definition and characteristics of the functional strength concept, The stages of functionalABSTRACTIVstrength training, Designing a training program for functional strength, Importance of functional strength training in basketball, physical and motor abilities of basketball player).The second section reviewed the previous studies on this subject, thus the researcher took four studies related to the subject of current research and commented on previous studies and illustrate the characteristic of the current study.3 - Chapter Three : Method and Procedures of the Research : In this chapter, the researcher uses the experimental method design on a sample consisted of (20) players from Al - Shurta Sport Club in basketball chosen purposively. The sample was divided into two groups (experimental and control group) through lottery (10) players per set.The researcher design a Form for offensive and defensive techniques and presented to the experts, and set the suitable tests for these groups, and explain the steps to perform this research and display these tests used in the research; then the researcher made an exploratory experiment of study and pre - tests and depend on a training program that he designed which lasts (8) weeks for (24) training units, and after the end of the training programs, he made the post - tests intentionally and declared the statistical methods used in the research.4 - Chapter Four : Displaying and Analyzing the Results : The researcher display, analyze and discuss the results of the pre and post - tests that done on the experimental and control group for physical, motor, and skill capabilities. Also, the researcher analyzes and discusses theABSTRACTVresults of the post - tests for both groups. The chapter was enhanced by tables and charts.5 - Chapter Five : Conclusions and Recommendations : The main conclusions were as follows : 1. The success of the training program, that the researcher design it for the functional strength exercises , which has been applied to the experimental group.2. The control group's reliance on physical preparation exercises during the setup phase, which led to a decline in the level of their physical, motor, and skill capabilities.3. The control group's reliance on the exercise of skill capabilities and duplicate throughout the preparation stage before competitions.4. The method of the functional strength training is one of the effective methods in the process of preparing the young basketball players, which depends on the work of the muscles of the center of the body and form the of motor performance.The main recommendations were : 1 - Adoption of the training program for functional strength exercises developed by the researcher in the process of preparing the young players of basketball.2 - Putting a developing sequence of stages for the training functional strength program during the season preparation of the players.3 - The need to distinguish between the concept of functional strength and the own power because of their differences in several areas, and being the two concepts that each one of them different from the other
