Abstract:
Desert areas in Iraq including the study area suffer from bad conditions in most of the economic sectors. In spite of the different natural resources found in the area, such as metal mining , which are mostly used to develop other areas not the region ,Balanced development is required to prevent social and political as well as the economic problems. these were the main reasons for this research (Desert cities - a tool to develop desert regions ) trying to find appropriate planning solutions to assest these areas.The research is divided in to four chapters.Chapter one includes theoritical concepts, Local ,Arabic and foreign studies concerning the subject. Chapter tow deals with the potentials of the study area and analyzing its role in the balanced spatial development of the region.Statistical model was employed in the third chapter to suggest a planning proposal combining scientific and practical experiences using (Analytic hierarchy process theory). A sample of planning experts was chosen ,15 from the academic field ,while the other 15 are decision or close to decision makers working at the study area planning departments in the central muhafatha. All have been consulted from the early planning stages till the end of the planning process. The best alternative was chosen accordingly( the third alternative - proposing new settlements and developing the existing ones ). Chapter four dels with the best alternative two levels implementation method by suggestingthree new settlements at the first level, the first one,s economic base is industrial located between Ukashat and al - Rutba , the second one with commercial economic base is desert tourism located at the pilgrim way. The second level concentrates on developing existing human settlements (Al - Rutba, Al - waleed and Al - Nakeeb ) by suggesting development projects considering the available potentials and including all the economic sectors.finally conclusions and accordingly recommendations were listed to guide any planning effect to develop the region.
