Abstract: Recently there have been an obvious trend for paying attention to the natural environment , with a goal to minimize the consumption of the natural resources and to decrease the pollutants released into the environment. The focus has been based on the urban sector which is the predominant sector with regards to energy consummation and , as a result the concepts of sustainable architecture became an essential part of the new architectural projects. These concepts conjures environmental and economic challenges and faced it efficiently and effectively through the sustainable planning, designing and the implementation of building methods with advanced technologies which has the impact of reducing the negative effects on the environment, and producing efficient and effective buildings.The school buildings are the most common buildings in the world since they provide the educational services to a large section of the society , and their occupants are numerous , and are characterised with a large hours of working days. There is consumption of large amounts of energy and resources in order to provide comfortable indoor environment to the occupants, so there have been obvious trend to the enforcement of sustainable architecture concepts in school buildings because of their obvious influence on the behaviour of occupants and the local community as a whole. This trend provides support to the learning processes, as well as minimizes the consumption of natural resources, which contributes to the creation of a high - performance learning environment.As such , The general problem may be considered as the lack of knowledge about the role of sustainability and its importance in the design of educational school buildings ,and the potential for sustainable schools to use the renewable energy sources in its sustainable environmental design. The special problem is the lack of knowledge about the planning strategies of the sustainable schools and the mechanisms to be used in the planning and designing process of the sustainable outdoor spaces , the lack of knowledge about the designing strategies and the technical strategies of the sustainable schools and the implementation mechanisms to use renewable energy sources. The goal of the research is to build a knowledge base about the importance of sustainability in school buildings including the immediate and future benefits, and the techniques and strategies of sustainable schools to provide a comfortable learning environment considering the hot dry climate, the techniques and strategies used in the sustainable renovation of school traditional buildings for developing these buildings in a sustainable way , defining the alternatives and the most appropriate technical mechanisms (operating, maintenance) and their suitability for a hot dry climate, comparison between the alternatives and the technological methods that could be employed in order to create a sustainable Iraqi school which is environmentally efficient and effective based on combining the passive and active methods.The research is based on the general hypothesis achieving sustainable concepts in architecture of school buildings through the integration of planning and design operations depending on the active and passive systems and their integration with the building within the hot dry climate , Secondary hypotheses availability of planning and designing determinants of the school buildings , and the potential for the sustainable operation and the positive interaction with the environment residentially , visually and operationally, taking into account future developments and the integration of external and internal educational spaces that achieved effective school building.The research includes five chapters, chapter one first topic addresses the role of school buildings and the different educational systems and the impact of the school building on students, teachers and society performance, the second topic addresses the role of sustainability in school buildings and their benefits and characteristics and impact on the educational process as a whole , chapter two first topic addresses the sustainable planning stages for school building and clarify the standards of sustainable planning for schools, the second topic addresses the importance of sustainability in the exterior school spaces and its properties , characteristics , benefits and its impact on the educational process, chapter three first topic addresses the considerations of sustainable school design and the internal environment quality standards of the sustainable school buildings and how to use the renewable energies in those buildings, the second topic addresses the importance of sustainable school buildings renovations and stages of sustainable renovation , third topic draw a conclusion of the theoretical framework indicators , chapter four application of the theoretical indicators on five selected projects in order to applied the reliable common on the local projects , chapter five comes out with a set of conclusions and recommendation that serve the Hypotheses of the research.
