Abstract:
There are about 120 million people around the world suffer from, multi types of allergic condition. This is a huge number and all these individuals currently use anti - allergic drugs that are associated with complex and plentiful side effects. In order to find an appropriate complementary drug from traditional a folk medicine, Licorice root extract were prepared and studied. Prednisolone was used as a comparable agent with testing Licorice root extract as an anti - allergic and anti - inflammatory agent (drug).Hence, analogy of anti - allergic effect of the plant Licorice extract versus oral corticosteroid (Prednisolone) after administration of ovalbumin motivate allergy in rabbits were investigated. This study was proceeded at the department of Medical Physiology College of Medicine, University of Babylon at the unit of the animal house and at the advanced analytical laboratories of physiology and pharmacology department during the period of November/2015 to October /2016.Adult Male New Zealand white rabbits were used in this study; the rabbits were randomly divided into different experimental groups. Ovalbumin was used to motivate allergy in rabbits and the sensitization challenge observations was confirmed by the presence of the clinical symptoms of sneezing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, elevated change in body temperature and changes in the level of total WBCs, Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Immunoglobulin E , Interleukin - 4, Interleukin - 5, and Interleukin - 6 in addition to monitor presence of histopathological changes.SummaryIIEight days after allergy induction, Licorice root in a dose of (160 and 80 mg/kg) was administrated orally for eight days. Blood samples were collected on day 16 and blood cell count, IgE, IL - 4, IL - 5 and IL - 6 concentration were determined. The results showed that ovalbumin could induce allergic asthma and display significant (p≤ 0.05) increased in total WBCs, Neutrophils, Eosinophils, body temperature, Immunoglobulin E, Interleukin - 4 Interleukin - 5 and Interleukin - 6 levels. However, oral treatment rabbits with Licorice root showed significant decrease (p≤ 0.05) in the total WBCs, Neutrophils, Eosinophils and body temperature as well as to significant decrease (p≤0.05) for serum levels of Immunoglobulin E , Interleukin - 4, Interleukin - 5 Interleukin - 6 immune variables. As, regards these effects of studied plant Licorice extract were comparable with those recorded and observable presented data within prednisolone - treated group and healthy control groups.
