بينما يعد الفصل الرابع فصلا تطبيقيا اذ يحتوي على التحليل والذي يسهم في الوصول الى النتائج الموجودة في الفصل الخامس الذي يحتوي ايضا على اثار تربوية ودراسات يمكن ان تبحث مستقبلا | The ability to influence another person or group of people has been a necessary element in human communication since the beginning of time. Human communication has many purposes and one of these purposes is that it can attract the attention of others to the idea that they are describing .Poets in general do their best to shape their poems with a few linguistic devices in order that they become able to capture the attention of their readers and wedge ideas in their memory i.e they prefer to indirectly convey what their mean. Oxymoron on the other hand, is one of the rhetorical devices that can enhance description, intensify emotions and provide shade of meaning. Accordingly, the main aim of this study is to investigate oxymoron as a figure of speech semantically in selected British and American modern poems. Such investigation provides a glimpse of whether British poets or American poets employ oxymora more than the others in their poems .In addition to that, it will show what rhetorical functions of oxymoron are used in both types of poems. An additional aim is that to identify what is the common type of oxymoron utilized in both modern British and American poems. Moreover, it tends to justify whether oxymoron as a figure of speech an effect on the style of writing modern poetry. As for some of the hypotheses concerning the present study, one of them is that both types of poets prefer the indirect oxymoron in their poems. Therefore, the indirect oxymoron is more in comparison with the direct one. The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the whole study, while chapter two is a theatrical one. Chapter three, on the other hand, is devoted to data collection which also includes the eclectic model to be followed in the analysis. Chapter four is the practical part of the study after which the conclusions are listed in chapter five as well as the recommendations and suggestions for further research.Figurative language is a very special tool of communication. Authors use it in literature according to the concept of foregrounding, because this language helps them to clarify specific conditions and provide shades of meaning. So, language and literature cannot be looked apart. Figurative language makes something prominent and it can enhance description and intensify emotions. Poets are like painters in their work, because a painter uses different colors to make some parts of the pictures more prominent than the other ones and they do the same by using the method of Foregrounding. Oxymoron on the other hand , is a commonly used figure of speech that is given frequently as a foreground device combining two apparently words in which there is a head noun and a modifier ( which is typically an adjective), as in 'complete partially' . In ancient times, poets employ it mainly to attract the attention to the idea that they are describing and also to emphasize something by means of linguistic devices, (Leech, 1969 : 43).Oxymoron is a paradox reduced to two words usually in an adjective - noun (thunderous silence) or adverb - adjective (inertly strong) relationship, and is used for effect. The effect can be ironic, paradoxical, humorous or merely emphatic.Sometimes, oxymoron results from conceptual sloppiness as in 'extremely average' and 'original copy', and it may remain unnoticed when the meanings of the two parts are not distinguished as in 'spend thrift' and 'artificial intelligence'. Typically, contrasts of this type are resolved by taking one term as the inferior attribute of a superior concept, for example, ' accurate estimate' is a kind of estimate, and the reply 'no comment' is not taken as a comment.Oxymora are not mere linguistic oddities. Words are far from neutral by standers of what happens in the world. They can shape their user's perceptions and direct their actions. For this reason, it is used to enhance the academic ability. The starting point of this study is an attempt to explicate oxymoron and analyze it as a figure of speech (linguistically); the researcher is going to study modern poems from a semantic point of view, because she is behind the meaning of oxymora. Then, the study aims at drawing general parameters by means of which the semantic perspective can be described. A manifestation for the various rhetorical effects of oxymoron and its kinds will also be highlighted. The practical parts include certain poems extracted from modern American and British poets. Finally, the findings of the study that the researcher has come up will be summed up in the conclusion.
