Abstract: One of the functions of language is to direct other people’s behaviour. This can be done by using directives, such as requestives, prohibitives, requirements, etc. The best way to see directives is by examining real life conversations. However, directives are classified as a subclass of speech act whose purpose is to get other people to do something for the speaker. The analysis of directives in parent - child dyads brings some difficulties for the researcher, because it is not easy to distinguish among the sub - classes of directives. Also directives come in direct and indirect speech which makes them confusing. The problem is that how one can distinguish between directive speech act types where they come in context.This study is a pragmalinguistic study of English directives used in family conversations. The investigation involves an analysis of the directive speech acts by describing the pragmatic means of identification and realization. Three hypotheses are proposed for testing this, these are : 1. Directive speech acts (requestives, advisories, requirements, permissives, prohibitives and questions) are linguistic phenomena that are applicable in parent - child conversations.2. Some directives are more frequent in use than others in every day parent - child conversations.3. Fathers' speech directives are varied from mothers'. Depending on context, fathers use requestives, prohibitives and permissives more than mothers, while advisories, questions and requirements are less used.VIIThe present study is limited to English parent - child conversations, particularly those that represent everyday family communications. The data consist of fifty five conversations. The analysis of data is based upon Bach and Harnish (1979) model of analysis. This model of analysis offers a discrimination and explanation for each one of directives. The following are the main findings of the study : 1 - Directives can be realized in different forms, the highest score of usage is (37.79%) questions, then (27.38) requirements, ﴾19.34﴿ requestives, ﴾10.11) advisories, (8.35﴿ permissives, and ﴾1.78%﴿ prohibitives. Therefore, the question sentences are the most representative directives in conversations.2 - Directive speech acts do not occur equally between fathers and mothers in every day conversations. Rather, it is observed that there are verity of percentages in all types.The thesis is rounded off with Pedagogical Implications, recommendations and suggestions for further research.
