Abstract: This field study was carried out in the South - East of Baghdad in AL - Dura Oil Refinery, to study the atmospheric stability classes, and to specify it severity. The anemometers and thermometers were setup at height 15 and 30 m. Wind direction instrument was installed at 30 m height. Digital camera was used for taking some photographs for the stack plume behavior with 3Mpixel resolution, and they were compared with all classes, The observations were recorded from 10 to 30/4/2008 except two days (18 and 28) with the sixteen runs in a day. Each run consisted of time interval 20 min distributed as four in night between 1 - 3 am, two runs at morning 6 and 7 am, two runs before noon at 10 and 11 am, two runs afternoon at 2 and 3 pm, and four runs in sunset at 5 - 7 pm and two runs at night at 9 and 10 pm. The total number of observations were 300 runs. The observations period was included a clear, standy and cloudy days. Data analysis was done using three methods : Richardson number, Ri, Bulk Richardson number, RB, and gradient temperature, ΔTZ. The more compatible methods were when comparing RB results those of ΔTZ with 74.65%, and the less compatible were between Ri and RB with 58.98%, and lastly the comparison between Ri and ΔTZ was 59.33%. Although RB was given the wider and better diagnosing for stability classes. In that time weakness ΔTz and the atmosphere in clear days transforming to be stable in night, neutral in sunrise and sunset and changing to be unstable during daytime specially afternoon with 100% for class A. The analysis of the results was showed that the atmosphere in shield sky or cloudy sloping to be neutral or to the weakness stable states for the C,E classes, with the ratio arrive to 100% in Ri method. During the occurance of the sandstorm or bushy dust with visibility 350 m, it would be unstable, at any time and when the storm ended, the class Gwas repeated. The study area have various stability, unstable conditions and its types unstable greatly with proportional to diagnose the clear days. Wind rose for the observation data denotes that the prevalent direction for winds would be NW with the frequency 36%. The dispersion coefficients for contaminants showed that the values of σy were always be wider than those of with σz for class A it's greater then the spreading in class B and so on. σy and σz were represent 56.6% based on class A. The power - law exponent depending on classes of stability with maximum value 0.88 for class G, and the minimum value 0.66 for class A.
