المستخلص: Due to the possibility of producing secondary radiation when a radiation is being attenuated by a certain type of radiation shield, the use of multilayer shielding appears very useful. This study aims to investigate the use of multilayer materials as nuclear radiation shielding.The work presented in this thesis focuses on the possibility of using polymer materials as a nuclear shield. This polymer (high density polyethylene and epoxy) is chosen due to different reasons among which are its local availability, the ease of mixing additives with it, light weight, and flexibility. The polymer as a single shield was investigated, where five different forms of the polymer were used as a single shield. These kind of shield are polymer (High Density Polyethylene HDPE, and Epoxy) alone, HDPE with a 38%by weight of Pb (as an additive), Epoxy with a 33%by weight of Pb, and Epoxy with a 33% by weight of Al (as an additive). The attenuation coefficient (μ), and buildup factor (B) were measured for all five forms and composition. In particular, the attenuation coefficients were found to increase with the increasing of the Pb or Al additive and decrease with gamma rays energy increase, while the buildup factor where decrease with the increase of the Pb or Al additive and increase with the increasing of energy.On the other hands, the multilayer shielding materials were chosen to be either Al or Pb slides (with different thickness) with a slide of 2.8cm of polymer (HDPE or Epoxy) in different repeated combinations. In order to evaluate the values of μ and B for this multilayer composition, the values of μ and B for each Pb and Al were evaluated. Then these two values were estimated for the different combinations of the multilayer shields.
