Abstract:
This is a study of the linguistic efforts of one of the most significant modern figures in the field of the science of origins and sources of Fiqh;namely, Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Al - Sadr It investigates his works on Sources of Fiqh ,especially his book. Lessons in Science of Sources as well as his investigation of External studies which one of his students, Sayyid Muhmood Al - Hashimi published under the title, Papers in Science of Sources A descriptive approach has been followed here to trace back the linguistic phenomenon on the part of the linguists on the one hand. On the other hand the very phenomenon of language is investigated as part of the work of the scholars of Sources. Finally, this investigation covers the point of view held by al - Sadr to trace the methods followed by such scholars and the their views so as to anchor at the recognition of the seriousness and mastery Al - Sadr practices while discussing and evaluating earlier linguistic view points. As far as the section on the thought and viewpoints of Sayyid Al - Sadr ,is concerned it analyzes these viewpoints into their main components and supporting ideas to pinpoint the sources from which AL - Sadr has drawn his own opinion when developing his view points here and there Then all that is of some relevance to what Al - Sadr suggests whether held by those pioneer linguists preceding or succeeding him has to be matched to arrive at the originality and novelty of his very suggestion or opinion By so doing , the researcher aims at showing the application and value of Al - Sadr ‘s contribution to language and interpretation of certain aspects of the very phenomenon of language. To outline the thesis, one may say that this research work falls into two parts preceded by an introduction on Al - Sadr biography including the features of his linguistic approach. Again, each of these two parts subdivides into two chapters. The thesis ends with some relevant results. Part I is entitled Sound and Meaning. The first chapter of the first part is on the source of meaning This chapter falls into three sections.Chapter Two carries the title of A Variety of Semantic Patterns. This chapter divides into two sections : Factual and Figurative language and Equivalence and Association. Part II is given the title, Letters and Sentences. Chapter One is on letters and it is divided into two sections. On the other hand, Chapter Two is has got the title of Sentences. This is also subdivides into two sections.The first and most important result of the present research work is the description of the theory developed by Al - Sadr. This theory can be added to the two traditional theories of sources of language. In the light of his new linguistic theory, Al - Sadr explains the origin of language and how sound is associated with meaning in the field of semantics. Al - Sadr's novel theory is called “Approved Association”. In this study of Al - Sadr's theory, the researcher has done his best to shed the light on the very linguistic theory under investigation discussing its basic components as well as its knowledge bases and linguistic dimensions within the frame of modern linguistics. Thus, this is a comparative study that seeks the application of such a linguistic theory to the significant interpretation of the initiation of meaning or semantics emphasizing the first connection between word and word meaning. Furthermore, among the other results of this study is the exposition of the various view points held by Al - Sadr. These views cover matters such as reality and fiction, association and equivalence, function words and their meanings, the use of prepositions as well as types of sentences. Al - Sadr's views have dealt with almost all aspects of language; starting with the word and ending with the whole sentence. Al - Sadr's efforts reflect this unique pioneer's own brilliance and innovation.. It is to this man, one may safely relate the invaluable innovation.that can never be matched in linguistics.
