Abstract:
A raw material mixture was used for forming the ceramic matrix cordierite(Cor), was included Iraqi clay (Kaolin Duekhla), Alumina and Talc. Prepare (Cu/Cor) composite, were obtained by addition a fine powder (99.99%) of copper as a reinforcement material, to cordierite ceramic with different percentage ratios (10, 20, 30 and 40) wt%. The temperatures for preparing the composite are (700,800) °C ,and the time of treatment is (1,2) hours respectively. The result of X - ray revealed that the peaks of cordierite phase decreased with increasing the additive amount of copper and slightly increased as temperature elevated from 700 oC to 800oC. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was used to observe morphology of blend materials . The comparison results of microphotograph images of cordierite ceramic and (Cu/Cor) composite with 40 wt % Cu , shows that the surface of cordierite sample is uniformly and compactly interference by copper distribution particles led to decreasing the porosity with increasing temperature to 800°C for two hours. The measurement of bulk density and apparent porosity was carried out according to Archimedes method and according to (ASTM) procedure, the results show that the density and thermal conductivity of (Cu /Cor) composite samples increased with increasing copper content ratios up to 40 wt% at the heat treatment (700,800) °C for (1,2) hours respectively. The results of calculation of apparent porosity (Por) and water absorption (%) was shows that, the values were decreased at 800°C more than 700°C ,for two hours more than one hours and at copper content ratio 40% more than (30, 20 and 10) respectively. Vickers micro hardness test is carried out by using "Digital Micro hardness tester VHS 1000. The presence of copper decreases the hardness, in comparison with the untreated ceramic sample(without copper) while the compressive strength increased with the increasing the temperature and copper content ratio from (38) to( 167.8 ) MPa at 800˚C . The addition of copper up to 40% in cordierite matrix lead to decrease of pores and then enhance the densification of (Cu/Cor) composite
