Abstract: This Research consisted of five chapters with a list of sources andsupplements : First chapter addressed methodological framework of the research, exhibited research justification, whereas the researcher referred to the status and development of music in ancient communities in both theoretical and practical levels, and its transferring between east and west, whereas many musical issues transferred to Arab world like western musical composition rules and musical instruments, especially orchestral ones, that encouraged many Arab musician, specially Iraqis, to take concern about these instruments and learn how to use them in orchestral compositions, and how that’s led to emergence of some Arabic and Iraqi orchestral compositions. Then the researcher talked about orchestral instruments, which cello instrument considered one ofthem in violin family, and he clarified that orchestral composer must have full knowledge about the characteristic of this instrument, like acoustic range and its performing techniques, whereas the composer writes special symbols on the score refer to these techniques like dynamic, ornaments and articulations…etc. Then the researcher addressed Iraqi orchestral compositions, whereas he observed a weak utilization of Cello capabilities through little usage of performing symbols in the scores. He realized the importance of academic research, and for lack of previous researches dealt with the subject, after he showed his justifications, he issued his research as : (The performance status of Cello instrument at Iraqi composers and the possibility of development).Then the researcher exhibited the importance of his research as follow : 1 - Studying the amount and types of performance techniques used in Cello line in Iraqi orchestral compositions.2 - Showing the role of Cello instrument in Iraqi orchestral compositions.3 - Useful for students and to those who involved in music field, especially the composers.4 - Considered as an academic source in music field, especially about Cello instrument.5 - Considered the first methodological study about cell instrument in Iraq.The performance status of Cello instrument at Iraqi composers and the possibility of development Descriptive and Analytic study A Thesis submitted to the University of Baghdad council of the College of Fine arts In partial of fulfillment of requirements for the Master Degree in Musicology Then the researcher defined the aim of his research as follow : 1 - Exposing amount and types of performance techniques used in Cello line in Iraqi orchestral compositions. 2 - Exposing performing status of musical usage at Iraqi composers.3 - Setting suggestions for developing composing for Cello instrument.After that, the researcher explained the limits of his research and he defined the terms. Chapter tow consisted of the theoretical framework and previous studies. Theoretical framework consisted of an introduction and four subjects; the introduction addressed music importance in community and its relation with human life. First subject addressed string instruments and orchestral composition, where he defined the term, history of the orchestra, orchestral music instruments and grouping, and then he addressed the development of bowing string instruments and violin family over the time. Third subject was about cello instrument, addressing its importance, especially in orchestral composition, its making history and development, some acoustic characteristics, and the most prominent composers and performers in the west, and then he talked about cello transferring to Arab world and Iraq.Third subject addressed for performance notation techniques symbols and their history. Forth subject addressed definition of some performance techniques and specialty on Cello. Third chapter addressed research procedures, where the researcher identified the research approach he taken. Then he chose his research community, which consisted of all orchestral musical compositions, composed within the time limits, (above 2008),involving a cello line, which consisted of 24 orchestral compositions. Then he exhibited the community to experts to choose the suitable compositions, they chose seven compositions as sample according to special conditions. Then the researcher named his research tools and the analytical standard, and his researcher requirements.Fourth chapter addressed musical analysis of the selected samples.
