Abstract: The many application of remote sensing and GIS required both the spatial resolution and spectral resolution be high, image fusion, or in other word image sharpening, is a useful technique. To obtain a new image from a set of input images that describes the scene better than any single input image date. In this thesis many image fusion techniques have been adopted to fuse the low spatial resolution multispectral image with high spatial resolution panchromatic image for the same scene. These techniques include traditional techniques such as Intensity - Hue - Saturation (IHS), Principal Component Transformation (PCT), Wavelet Transformer (WT) and variational technique like P+XS method. The fusion process have been implemented on three type of images represent three studied areas captured by different sensors with different spatial and spectral resolution, first studied area image for Sinbad Island in Basra province was gathered by Landsat7 ETM+ sensor with 30m resolution for multispectral bands and Quickbird with 0.6m spatial resolution for panchromatic band. Second studied area image for Green zone in Baghdad province was captured by QuickBird with (2.4m and0.6m) for multispectral and panchromatic band respectively. Kingston County in Canada was captured by landsat7 ETM+ with (30m and 15m) spatial resolution for multispectral and panchromatic bands respectively. Many Image Quality Metrics such as correlation coefficient (CC), Relative Dimensionless Global Error in Synthesis (ERGAS), Relative Average Spectral Error (RASE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), special correlation (SC), and Spectral Information Divergence (SID) have been used to compute the quality of resultant fused image.
