Abstract:
After this hard and interesting artistic study of the poetic image in the poetry of (Sayyed Muslim Al - Hilli), the research has come with certain results, visions, facts, and the approach adopted by the researcher. The most significant recognisable results are to be stated, leaving other ones aside, according to the rule of (What is not realised in whole cannot be entirely left). The following are the major results : . The research is based on three fields : compiling the poetry of Sayyed Muslim Al - Hilli, verifying it and its approach, and the artistic study. The researcher has hoped to compile all his poetry that is scattered here and there, left unstated, despoiled between libraries and individuals, and not easily taken in hand as if it is missing being, neither alive nor dead. However, this is what the researcher has worked on in collecting the poetry of Al - Hilli. Yet, he cannot call the whole collection as (Divan, i.e., poetical works by one author) as there might be other works not collected or even ascribed to other poets mistakenly or deliberately without any respect to efforts of other.. The poet, Sayyed Muslim Al - Hilli ( - ), was born in Hilla, Iraq, and lived in it. Later, he moved to Holy Najaf, since ( ), with his father, for the sake of religious study. He studied there until he was absolutely independent in legislation; authority in Islamic judicial system and discretion (i.e., Ijtihad). He obtained this authority in religion, philosophy, and Islamic jurisprudence, from his masters at that time; Al - Asfahani, Al - Iraqi, and Kashif Al - Ghita'. In addition, he was known as a poet, though this feature is not widely welcomed in his environment by the highly conservative families. . Al - Hilli is taken as a modern poet belonging to the classical school in literature, and poetry in particular, headed by scholars such as : Sayyed Haider Al - Hilli, Sayyed Ja'far Al - Hilli, Sayyed Muhammad Sa'eed Al - Habbubi, Sayyed Muhammad Ridha AL - Hindi, Shaikh Muhammad Ridha Al - Shibibi, Muhammad Mahdi Al - Jawahiri, and Shaikh Ali Al - Sharqi. These scholars, even the poet (Muslim Al - Hilli) himself, preferred the classical traditions in writing poetrybecause of the social environment.. The sources of the poet's culture are five : hereditary transmission, religious, historical, literary, and literary seminars and assemblies.. The poet sticks to the classical concept of 'image' called for by the old critics. The poet himself has a point of view in this regard. The research has also uncovered the different opinions of scholars about the concept of 'image'. The tools of the 'image' have been taken into account as they are similar to all the investigated opinions.. The poet depends on different sources in his artistic image : . a natural, fixed, and silent; . a natural, changing/moving, and sounding/motional. . The poet has employed the changing/moving images of (wild animals, reptiles, and insects) as intellectual concepts telling of his deep intention and his distinctive sources of creativity.. The aspects of the poetic image that are employed by the poet are : simile, metaphor, and antonomasia/metonymy).. The distinctiveness of the poet comes also from his excellence in the waythese artistic images are formed and represented : visual images (sight, hearing, tasting, smell, and feeling) are greatly activated. Each one of these has a function and a position. The one of (sightedness) is widely used. . Mental images are also used by the poet. . Other images (personification, reification, and materialisation) are also used creatively in a way that they become a stylistic feature of his poetry.. The semantic interpretation in reading the poetry of Al - Hilli is not easily available to the normal reader. The keen reader who acts as an interpreter (uncovering the text's values) and a critic (unearthing a critic - oriented reading)can indulge into this kind of poetry.. The vision of the poet for the three poles 'universal vision of Allah, Prophetic Message, Imamate, and Resurrection', 'man', and 'universe' is built on religious beliefs, and intellectual and philosophical standpoints taken as Muhammad and also as educationally international moralities. The poet, accordingly, is absolute beauty and perfection addict and is absolute power and knowledge addict. These are highly reflected and artistically condensed in his poetry and imagination and materially embodied in the world of existence, actuality, and reality.. The most significant part of the present research is based on 'the reception theory' whose five major parameters are : a. reception (accepting the text and receiving it for the purpose of reading); b. response (interacting with the text depending on its outer icon);c. exploration (the first reading seeking the sense of the text);d. reconstitution (the second reading of the text which is a more deeper one for the sake of the text's architecture); and e. interpretation (uncovering the hidden meaning of the text). These are the results that the present research has come up with in the poetry of Sayyed Muslim Al - Hilli. However, such results are not completely decisive in its artistic investigation of the 'image' to the poet; other researcher might be able to discover certain issues that are not documented here.Different approaches and parameters in this wide field could be adopted;hence, their results would also be different. At last, the research cannot say that he has achieved absolute perfection in this research. Absolute perfection is for Allah and only for Him.
