Abstract: Halliday and Hasan (1976) express a view that 'cohesion' is the fundamental component of the resources used for text construction. According to Halliday and Hasan, cohesive devices represent those ties that exist between two or more elements within a text independent of structure, for example between a personal pronoun and an antecedent proper noun, such as John……he, John and Tom……they. Over and above, a grammatical cohesive device refer to a 'semantic relation' which is organized within or even between sentences. Moreover, Halliday and Hasan confirm that there is a correlation between grammatical cohesive devices and the technique of narration in short stories. The current thesis will investigate the grammatical cohesive devices in selected short stories for children and adults written by the American writer William Sydney Porter, his pen name is O.Henry. Accordingly, the present study aims at : 1) Examining the types and frequencies of each of the grammatical cohesive devices used in adults' and children's short stories, written by O.Henry, 2) comparing between the grammatical cohesive devices used in adults' and children's short stories, written by the same writer, 3) assessing how grammatical cohesive devices are correlated with the average length of sentences and the techniques of narration in four of O.Henry's short stories for children and adults, 4) assessing how the density of grammatical cohesive devices affects the technique of narration. To attain the objectives of the study, the researcher adopts Halliday and Hasan's concept of cohesion. Halliday and Hasan's classification and discussion of grammatical cohesive devices are adopted for the purposes of the analysis. The texts selected for the analysis are four short stories for children and adults written by O.Henry. Two of these stories represent the external and objective technique of narration, whereas the others represent the internal and subjective technique of narration. The difference between the two types of narration can be discussed by the whole detachment or non - involvement of the narrator in the external and objective technique of narration versus the whole involvement in the second type of narration. The analysis of the grammatical cohesive devices in the four texts is of two types : a) A quantitative discussion of the grammatical cohesive devices in terms of types and frequencies and density will be carried out and the results will be tabulated, b) a qualitative discussion that draws upon the quantitative discussion will be assessed. The analysis of the texts focuses on the density of grammatical cohesive devices. It is found that the grammatical cohesive devices in the children's stories more than those in the adults' stories. It is also found that the writer uses denser referential grammatical cohesive devices when the technique of narration is external and objective. The density of the grammatical cohesive devices decreases when the technique of narration is internal and subjective. Finally, on the basis of the findings arrived at, some suggestions have been provided for future studies.
