Abstract:
The concentrations of Radon gas and their progeny have been measured in the building of Al - Mustansiriyah University College of Science. Deanship building, four flowers, includes dean office and administrative staff in addition to the department of mathematics, department of biology, lecture rooms and laboratories affiliated in addition to the basement of the Deanship building, building of department of chemistry libraries, building of department of physics libraries, and building of meteorology or atmospheric Science (in which the detectors have been suspended, but most of them had been lost because of the maintenance work, which cooperated with the preparation of this study). The nuclear track detector of solid state CR - 39 technique has been used to study the trace effect. 356 detectors have been suspended and distributed (two detectors) in each location under study. Detectors with 1cm x1cm area have been suspended with two heights; the first height represents the sit down mode and the second represents the standing mode, for a period of 90 days except those for the department of chemical libraries because of an official holiday in the Al - Mustansiriyah University. The dosimeters have been design to be adequate for the research environment. The samples are collecting after exposing time for the period mentioned above, then applying the chemical etching and Statistics numerical process the density of the nuclear has been calculated in order to calculate the concentrations of Radon and their daughters. The calibration process has been made in this work by exposing other detectors (similar of that used for the detecting) to Radium - 226 source with known activity radiation. It was found that all concentrations are within the world wide limits. It has been found the Radon concentrations in the basement of Deanship building are relatively higher than in other location have been observed. These concentrations are decreasing gradually with height to reach the lowest value at the fourth floor. It strengthens that the Radon gas is heavier than air. The yearly effective dose of the exposure to Radon has been calculated. The Radon concentration is within the world wide permissible limits.
