He wrote twenty eight novels, novellas, and nonfiction. Harrison wrote twelve novellas and a rigorous critical analysis for each. He is an anti - puritan. There is almost a total absence of God in these novellas. The individual assumes religions role in society. There is responsibility for the salvation of the emotional and spiritual self. Harrison attempts to articulate the problems inherent in Americas progress from a rural to an urban society into the twentieth century and its impact upon individual lives. In fact the basis for a persons life and well - being was found in the land. Modern urbanized and industrialized America moved away from this agrarian. Harrisons work explores the effect of uncertainty caused by a fast - moving, fast - evolving society on the individual. Harrisons characters are dreamers. They exist on the edge of failure. The basic theme in Harrisons prose is the attempt to survive in contemporary society, which is depicted as shapeless. It provides no security for individuals. He must create his sense of meaning and belonging. The novellas explore the theme of revenge. People resort to that kind of action when their lives are threatened. The role of revenge mixes brutality and kindness. The revenge itself can sometimes be seen as a kindness to the person being revenged and brutality toward the person on whom this revenge is taken. Harrisons characters tend to be rural by birth. They retained some qualities of their agrarian heritage. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the way the concept of revenge is portrayed in Harrisons selected novellas. Harrison presents the individuals struggle for constancy in a world of imbalance. The thesis is divided into four chapters and a conclusion. Each chapter discusses two novellas. Chapter one is an introduction, consists of three sections : Section One is concerned with definitions, the first crime of revenge in the history of humanity, Seven Deadly Sins association with revenge, and the psychological view towards revenge. Section two discusses the American Postmodern life and fiction. Section three studies Harrisons early life, influences and his major works. Chapter Two is divided into two sections. Each section discusses one novella with background, an overview, the main character and the concept of revenge in each one. Section One discusses the novella Legends of the Fall. Section Two studies the novella Revenge. Chapter Three falls into two sections represent background, an overview, the major character and the concept of revenge in two novellas, The Man Who Gave Up His Name, and The Woman Lit by Fireflies (1990)Chapter Four consists of sections that signify background, an overview, the major character and the concept of revenge in Julip (1994), and A Good Day to Die (1974). The study ends with a conclusion that sums up the most significant findings.
